Version 1.. 1 brings YoFrankie up to date with Blender, taking advantage of new features.. There have also been improvements in the game logic and levels.. Includes the 3 winning levels from the level design competition, with additional improvements.. Updated Game Logic for Blender3D 2.. 49a.. Runs faster, from testing level 1 home: 2.. 48a averages 50fps, 2.. 49a 80fps*.. Cleaned up blend files, materials, textures, animations, unfinished levels.. Blogroll.. Development.. 1st Prize to Moraes Junior s Nut Level.. Moraes s level is really involved with a catapult, ziplines with baskets, lava waterfalls that makes up quite a challenging puzzle.. The aim is to collect all the sheep in the level onto a counterweight that enabled a catapult to launch you to the levels end.. 2nd Prize to Bruno Franci s Lighthouse Level.. Bruno s level is set on a stunning island with interesting areas explore.. The goal is to get to the lighthouse were the game finishes.. 3rd Prize to Bradley Wabbersen s Underworld Level.. Underworld an example of what you can make with existing props.. While its small and not as advanced as the other 2, I m glad a level like this got in.. Download.. (complete data files including new levels 180mb).. Or separate levels that can be copied into the existing YoFrankie data files.. Nut Level (11mb).. Lighthouse Level (9mb).. Underworld Level (0.. 1mb).. Installing the separate levels.. Extract the zip and enter the directory, copy everything (levels, textures, etc) into the original YoFrankie BGE folder released on the DVD or downloaded on-line.. You can start YoFrankie from the menu and these levels will be available from the small level selector world.. These levels will be included with the next release of YoFrankie which will be updated for Blender 2.. 49.. Bugs.. All the levels have some glitches that need to be resolved.. Since this competition is for level design, I accept that level logic and scripts will need tweaking, this can be worked out before inclusion in the next release.. *Update*.. Competition Deadline, Checklist.. Its almost over, some submissions have already been handed in but I m expecting to see some more levels so no conclusions yet! Suffice to say that I m happy with the outcome so far and there will be a 1st, 2ns and 3rd.. Heres a list of things to check off before you upload your level to make it easier for me and others to play.. Make sure your blendfile can  ...   Prize 100 Euro.. (Payment via PayPal).. Notes.. You may focus mostly on one area, awesome graphics, great puzzles, fun 2 player, challenging platforms to glide between etc.. This project should be something a non technical artist can finish.. You can make a level without adding any logic bricks or scripts, the players have their own logic, so you can get by with knowing 3-4 property names to assign to different level objects - see the.. wiki.. for details.. Your level doesn t need to use GLSL materials (old texface materials are ok too).. This level will eventually be included with other levels, start by adding your level to the levels directory, and reuse existing groups where possible.. Even if you don t win, your level can still be included in the next release of YoFrankie.. This is not an official Blender Foundation competition, see my contact details below.. To get updated YoFrankie files from Subversion see.. projects.. org/projects/yofrankie.. (includes some texture updates but not a requirement for making your level).. Your not limited to a woodland theme, however if you want to add a new world type (space, ice, underground etc), your giving yourself a bigger project.. No age limit on participating.. Judging.. I ll run a community vote on blender artists, however I ll decide on the final outcome if it seems biased in some way or if people are not able to test levels.. Rules.. Collaboration is fine, but I ll only accept an entry from a single person.. Final level must be under 100mb compressed (excluding existing assets).. No modifications to the player logic (jump height, glide distance etc) - bug fixes are an exception.. Your level must be under the same creative commons license as all existing YoFrankie levels.. No node based materials (just use material-textures for more efficient shaders).. You can enter more then one level.. Level cannot have been entered into a previous competition.. Guidelines.. Texture dimensions should be one of 1024, 512, 256, 128 etc.. With a maximum of 1024 1024, (Animated textures and shadowmaps are an exception, can be 2048 2048).. I m purposefully leaving the poly count undefined, use the existing levels as a reference for polygon density and try to minimize the use of alpha sorted faces.. Level size should be somewhere between the lava level and level_1_home - 20 20 to 120 120 blender units.. Uploading.. There is an open ftp space on blender.. It works like this:.. ftp to: download.. user: anonymous.. password: your email address.. When logged in, go to the directory ‘incoming’.. What you put there is visible here:.. http://download.. org/ftp/incoming/.. This upload space deletes all old files after a couple of weeks, so don’t use it for permanent storage..     Descriptive info: Project Apricot.. After Orange and Peach, Blender Institute continued with a new open project: Apricot.. This time it wasn’t a movie but a 3D game! Starting february 1st 2008, a small team of again the best 3D artist and developers worked on a game jointly with the on-line community.. The main character in the game has been based on the short 3D animation open movie Peach.. The project ended in august, and in october 2008 the DVD and game was released.. The Game.. The original project goal was to work on a cross platform game (at least Linux, Windows, OS X), using Blender for modeling and animation, Crystal Space as 3D engine and delivery platform, and Python for some magic scripting to glue things together.. The purpose was to not only make a compelling 3D game experience, but especially to improve and validate the open source 3D game creation pipeline, with industry-standard conditions.. Halfway during the project, we noticed the great advances made in Blender s internal Game Engine, so we ve added delivering the project entirely in Blender as a target for Apricot as well.. Targets.. - Validation: create full functional game prototype, industry quality.. - Crystal Space development: HDR lighting, game logic, character animation.. - Blender development: animation prototyping, pipeline improvements, GLSL (node) shading editor, improvements in logic editing (states), general Blender GE improvements.. - Realize in Open Source (GPL/LGPL), deliver in Open Content (Creative Commons).. - Education: Training/workshops, presentations, documentation, DVD.. How.. The Blender Foundation and Crystal Space community will be the main financiers for Apricot.. Additional support will be by Grupo Ikusnet and the Dutch Game Days Foundation.. There are things that still need to be finished, like fx(note the lava platforms are supported now!), water, lighting, sky, and animated WATER.. We re really motivated by how enthusiastically the blender community received the news about using the bge in this project.. I ve had my doubts as to how many people were actually interested in the bge, but evidently there are a quite lot of you.. Make more noise!.. We re making all new levels for the bge game, and we re bringing in new characters.. Campbell is finishing up the game logic for Frankie, and then shifts focus to implementing enemies and animals to bully.. By the beginning of August we ll be wrapping this game up into a complete package with menus, etc.. We ve also gone over the animation submissions! It s there at last, the bake panel has existed far too long without the shadow bake option.. Thanks Cambo! The plan for the BGE game is to use dynamic shadows for the character, and bake shadows for the level.. Note the quad split option in the image above.. Blender s baking needed an option for quad splitting as well.. Internally, most systems will split a quad into 2 triangles, and blender s no exception.. It checks for non-planar (bent) quads and splits them in the direction that gives the least distortion.. While good for rendering models, this causes a problem for baking because the split direction can differ from the one used to display and export.. One solution is to triangulate all faces before baking and exporting, but this isn t ideal since it would loose the edge loop topology and make models harder to edit later.. To make matters more confusing, graphics card don t all split quads the same way, but many game engines just convert to triangles when exporting.. Campbell was also kind enough to add this option to split quads in a predictable manner (0,1,2) (.. ) etc.. 29 Comments..
