  • Title: Our history
Descriptive info: Our history.. War on Want was established in 1961 during the “Golden Years”.. of European economic prosperity.. Financial stability led to a decade of discovery in the 1960s and a generation who began questioning the inequalities and injustices in the world.. The primary aim of War on Want was to spark public consciousness to the fact that two-thirds of mankind was suffering from malnutrition and to create public opinion that would encourage more governmental aid towards the relief of poverty.. To both increase awareness of  ...   of War on Want in Northern Ireland, Betty Nabney opened the first War on Want shop in Bradbury Place, Belfast.. Over the last 50 years, thousands of War on Want NI volunteers have helped in these shops raising vital income for poverty alleviation programmes.. • Title: Chairmans Note
Descriptive info: Chairmans Note.. I have been Chair of War on Want NI for a short period of time only, but during that time, two things have become clear to me.. First, the staff and volunteers of the organisation have a tremendous passion for the work which goes above and beyond the call of duty.. For example, at a recent volunteers’ day, I witnessed certificates being handed out which recorded almost 500 years of volunteering service, including some who had served for 40 years! Secondly, after all these years there is still a huge need to keep on with our involvement in Africa.. I spent two years in Karamoja between 1979- 81, shortly after Amin had been overthrown and I had my first return visit to East Africa last year, 30 years on.. Although visually much had changed – mobile phones in cattle camps, internet access in most cities, international brands everywhere I looked – many things had stayed where I had left them all those years ago.. Poverty, injustice, preventable illnesses causing early and totally un-necessary deaths and the every present HIV/AIDs problem being the most  ...   standard of living” The Statement of Human development UN 1998 The Millennium Development goals are a set of high level, strategic aims of the UN and are an attempt to set realistic targets for development progress by 2015.. They include, reducing by half those people who exist on $1 a day, to reduce by two thirds those children who will not live to see their 5th birthday and to develop a global partnership for development which will boost freedom justice and democracy.. However well intentioned, we are not on track to meet the goals.. Indeed it is likely that in a time of recession and ‘belt tightening’ we will be told that “charity begins (and ends) at home” and this is presented as a pragmatic and indeed moral argument at a time of recession.. We must challenge this philosophy where we find it.. This website opens a door and let’s you see into the world of others and this glimpse, this vision should challenge you and change you.. And if, just if, you catch the vision…….. who knows where it will take you?.. Michael Wardlow..
