I also handed out seeds for the kiddos to grow their own garden and show them they can eat what they grow.. I had gymnastic demonstrations to show they can get involved in sports to get exercise.. I am hoping to keep this going at this day care , and that it can be picked up by other day cares down the line.. Madison.. - 19 July 2012 - 4.. 05AM (GMT).. Hi, I am a cadette and I just completed my siliver award.. My partner and I decided to build birdhouses and bird feeders for the birds in our community.. Since there is a lot of new housing in my community, birds are losing their homes and food sources.. Birds are very necessary for the ecosystem.. We also lead a workshop about how to make birdhouses and bird feeders for younger girls.. We then donated them to schools in my community.. We helped not only the birds, but our schools by beautifying their propery.. Some teachers will be using the bird houses in their curriculum teaching about the ecosytem and birds.. My partner and I also learned how to improve our own personal leadership and organizatgional skills.. We led a workshop of over 60 girls that lasted almost two days! We had to organize the activities, the schedule, and even the leaders!.. My project can be recreated in your commuinity or anywhere in the world!.. Brianna Swinderma.. - 14 July 2012 - 6.. 13AM (GMT).. Hi, my name is Brianna Swinderman and i live in New Mexico and am part of the Girl Scouts of New Mexico Trails Council.. I am 16 and have been in Girl Scouts 11 years.. I have done my Silver Award and am working on my Gold Award.. My project is called Bags of Hope.. This is a project near and dear to my heart.. All throughout my life I have heard and seen the suffering of foster kids and Domestic Violence victims.. This is why I am starting this project of collecting new and gently used suitcases and duffel bags.. My Mission is to ensure that Foster children and Domestic Violence victims can leave danger with their belongings in tact.. Most of the time they have to leave with their belongings in trash bags.. They deserve more dignity than that.. That is why I chose to start this project.. My goal is to obtain 1OOO or more.. I am doing this in hopes of bettering the lives of these victims, to better my community and to support this issue, and of achieving my Girl Scout Gold Award.. Im looking forword to being a Senior next August!!.. Allie.. - 28 March 2012 - 6.. 15PM (GMT).. I am a cadette girl scout and I just finished my silver award.. I hosted a senior sock hop for the retirement community because I thought we should bring back old memories for them and teach young girls now how it was back then.. Everyone enjoyed it and we learned what life was like for them and some of them learned some of their family tree.. They learned what their grandparents or great grandparents did for fun.. I also learned a lot of things I didn't know before.. WE learned dance moves and some old history.. I think it was important that the young girls learned what life was like back then, and that the people there who don't get out much learned what it was like now.. It brought back old memories for them and happier times so they could forget about the state they were in now.. I had a lot of fun doing this project, and I am looking forward to my Gold Award!.. Katie and Rhianna.. - 25 March 2012 - 3.. 59AM (GMT).. This year my friend Rhianna and I finished our Silver Award.. Gabriel Davies Tavern, a historical site in our town, attracts many mosquitoes(which ruins woodwork and bothers guests) and bats have lived in the attic.. We raised money to buy, paint, and have Public Works install two bat houses on the property.. We also prepared another bat house in case one gets damaged, created pamphlets to hand out at the Tavern, and spoke to a younger troop about the importance of bats.. Not only was this project a lot of fun, but we got to learn more about bats and the history of the Tavern.. fatima habib.. - 19 March 2012 - 11.. 08PM (GMT).. This project helped with trail safety as many signs were broken, hard to read,or had false/expired information.. I worked with the local snowmobile club for this project.. One of the members would make the signs then I would sand, paint, and finish them.. I completed thirty signs in all.. The best part was when I got to ride on the trails to put up the trail signs.. When I hung up a new sign I had painted, I could really see the difference from the old signs.. They were much easier to read.. I'm glad that these new signs will be around for a long time.. These signs will help snowmobilers to travel safely on the trails.. Zenel.. - 28 January 2012 - 11.. Im from st.. vincent.. My country is located in the Western Hemisphere.. Kaitlin.. - 26 November 2011 - 12.. 19AM (GMT).. I have been a Girl Scout for years and now, finally, as a senior in high school I am in the final stages of completing my Girl Scout Gold Award Project.. My project, “Teens and Healthy Choices,” addressed the issue of healthy living for teenagers in a busy lifestyle.. My project was geared toward middle school students who were preparing for the numerous changes in high school.. I surveyed students at three middle schools about how the food they ate and the amount of exercise and sleep they got.. I used the data I obtained to create charts of their data, showing the students their eating, exercising, and sleep habits.. The goal of my project was to inform the students about their choices and help them live healthier.. I wanted to allow them to get regular healthy habits, which could continue, into high school.. I provided my informational PowerPoint with the data and ended with a Jeopardy Game on what I had taught.. At the end of my presentation, I handed out bags of donated food, reusable water bottles, plastic water bottles, and healthy snacks in food groups the students seemed to be lacking in.. Thank you Girl Scouts and World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scout (WAGGGS) for inspiring me to take action in my community of tackling the problems of unhealthy eating.. From my project, I have affirmed my love for science and healthy living.. Next year in college, I will be pursuing nursing and helping others.. Once again, thank you Girl Scouts! :).. - 22 November 2011 - 5.. 19PM (GMT).. Hi i'm Emily.. I have been in guides for 2/3 years now and am currently doing my Baden Powell.. I like creating art because it helps me express my feelings and reduce stress.. I thought the kids in Appalachia would like this opportunity, too.. We held a Christmas party in two different locations to distribute the gifts.. We were able to help around 100 kids.. The kids were so excited to receive their gifts.. For my Silver Project the Cadettes in my troop all got together to redo the reunification rooms at Greater Hope Foundation.. Greater Hope Foundation is a foster care agency that places kids with foster families, provides training for foster parents and supervises visitations in the reunification rooms.. These rooms started out with plain white wall, some books missing covers and pages and old toys.. We started by putting together a letter asking for donations and taking them to our local businesses.. Once we collected donations we went shopping for supplies that we needed.. We painted ABC’s and shapes on the walls of the younger kids room and cheerful sayings on the walls in the older kids room.. We also got donations of toys and books which we placed in the rooms.. In the lounge we painted a sky on the ceiling and hung a canvas of inspirational quotes on the wall along with some new end tables.. In the end the rooms were a brighter more kid friendly and home like place to interact with their biological parents.. sahar.. - 24 October 2010 - 11.. It was a good ceremony to do and we learned a lot about our nations past and how to honor it correctly.. We also learned 50 hours is a lot bigger then it seems so plan ahead!.. - 13 September 2010 - 2.. For our silver award, my troop and I designed and held a library program during the summer.. I love the fact that in Girl Scouting, we have all the fun that we can have, meet different girls from various places AND at the same time be catalysts of change.. It's the fact that we dare to make a change in the world and help not only our brothers and sisters who are in need but also our mother earth that I love this organization so much.. And maybe this is not just an ordinary group, it's a tight-knit family that wherever you are in the world, there is that Girl Guide/Girl Scout who is a friend and a sister to you..
