Please join us in welcoming John Goff, UCP s new Community Services Director.. As Community Services Director, John will oversee UCP's supported living and community inclusion ("Choices") services.. John came to us from the east coast, where he served as the Executive Director of a large non-profit that supports adults with disabilities through residential, recreational, and individualized supported employment services.. Prior to his work on the east coast, John spent 10 years in Oregon, where he served adults and youth with disabilities in different capacities.. John first became interested in disability issues as a teenager while volunteering at a UCP affiliate in New York.. He has dedicated his career to empowering people with disabilities ever since.. John is committed to the mission and values of UCP, and is very excited to have returned to the Northwest community.. We are pleased to congratulate Melissa Miller, the head of Employment Solutions (UCP's supported employment department), on reaching ten years of employment at UCP.. Melissa has been employed by UCP since April 30, 2003.. She started as a Roommate (live-in caregiver) for one of the people we support.. Our most recent neighborhood was Beaumont/Concordia, where we had the pleasure of touring the Concordia New Seasons Market and McMenamins Kennedy School.. At New Seasons, we were greeted with tasty samples in each department.. The locally made cheese and pastry sample were especially popular, and so was an impromptu lesson on how to properly filet a salmon.. At McMenamins Kennedy School, we learned about the building s past (it used to be an elementary school) and about the fantastic murals, several of which were created by middle school students.. What s next, you say? Well, for the months of March and April, we'll be focusing on Oregon City.. So far, we ve planned tours of Oregon City Fire Station #15 and.. The money received through this program will go towards Platinum Sponsorship of UCP s Walk, Roll n Run.. The funds raised at the WRR are the primary source of funding for UCP s Family Support Department.. Here s how the program works: every time a Lawyers Title transaction closes during the second quarter of 2013 (April-June), a portion of the transaction fees will be donated to UCP.. The UCP national organization has selected 10 nonprofit leaders from across its affiliate network to participate in the 2013-14 class of the.. UCP Emerging Leaders Academy.. and one of them is our own Family Support Director, Susan Cushman.. The program seeks to expand and develop the skills of promising nonprofit managers in the UCP affiliate network.. Selected participants spend a year in leadership training and mentorship with established leaders throughout the UCP network.. Susan will participate in in-depth professional development workshops.. She'll also attend regular conference sessions, collaborate with UCP executives from across the country and complete a service project that will not only benefit our affiliate, but the UCP network as a whole.. Congrats to Susan!.. UCP Cruises into the Portland International Auto Show.. Feb 12.. Thanks to a generous donation of complimentary admission tickets from the Oregon Auto Dealers Association, a large group of Choices Program and Supported Living customers along with their UCP support staff were able to attend and explore the 2013 Portland International Auto Show.. This year s show was packed with activities for all ages and abilities to enjoy and participate.. Performance Mobility (also friends of UCP) partnered with the Auto Show this year to design a Mobility Zone showcasing specialized mobility equipment, accessible vans, trucks, and even motorcycles to reinforce the idea that despite barriers limiting a person s physical abilities; there are tools available to live an active, fulfilling life without limits! Two Decembers ago, UCP s support services brokerage, UCP Connections, opened its doors with fifteen customers, three Personal Agents and a whole lot of support from UCP and the community.. Since then, Connections has enrolled over 180 clients.. Connections provides person-centered planning, case management, fiscal intermediary services, and resource referral.. But what does that actually mean? Brokerage Director Sarah Knight describes Connections role as celebrating individuality, providing education, offering resources and support, and lending an empathetic ear to support the people we work with, helping them to realize their goals and sometimes to deal with the consequences of their choices.. It s a very exciting and meaningful job.. As Sarah says, the people we support are doing the things that Oregonians do.. A fantastic day was had by all at this year's Walk, Roll 'n' Run, which was held September 8th.. Thanks to everyone who participated and volunteered! We'll be posting more information soon.. Walk, Roll 'N' Run Update.. Sep 6 '12.. Do you want to join UCP for our largest special event of the year--the 8th annual Walk, Roll 'n' Run which will be held this Saturday, September 8th? If so,.. you should know that today is your last chance to register online, as online registration closes tonight (September 6th) at midnight.. You are welcome to register at the event itself, but day-of-event registration will cost $30 instead of $25.. In other WRR news, we are pleased to report that we have raised $62,000 so far--we are so close to our goal of $80,000!.. We are getting excited to see you all on September 8th at this year's Walk, Roll 'n' Run--UCP's biggest special event of the year! We've already raised almost $45,000, which means we're halfway to our goal.. And don't forget: the top fundraisers will receive wonderful donated prizes.. Since then, our partnership has only grown.. Their founder and Executive Director, Kim Stegeman (aka Rocket Mean), spoke this year at our annual "Friends Breakfast".. She talked about how excited she was to find an event that has the word "roll" in the title, and how much she enjoys being part of the UCP community.. The Rose City Rollers will be rolling along with participants at this year's Walk, Roll 'n' Run.. They are also working with us to put together a "Family Skate Night" outing in the near future, so stayed tuned for details on that.. Find out more about the Rose City Rollers.. The 2012 Walk, Roll 'n' Run.. Aug 8 '12.. Are you ready for this year's Walk, Roll 'n' Run?.. This is our 8th annual Walk, Roll 'n' Run, and it will be held on Saturday, September 8, 2012.. Our fundraising goal is $80,000 and every penny raised will go towards funding our Family Support Department.. Family Support provides resources, support, respite and hope to families raising children with cerebral palsy.. Hundred of people come together to walk/roll around a 2.. 5 mile course around the Esplanade or to run a 5K or 8K run along the Springwater Corridor.. Jeff Corwin has been a part of UCP's Supported Living program for years.. Recently, he became a Master Recycler.. As a part of his Master Recycler volunteer hours, Jeff decided to tackle recycling at this year's Walk, Roll 'n' Run.. Whole Foods Market Green Team will be joining Jeff by providing the recycling/composting containers, and volunteers to help participants recycle and compost correctly.. Jeff will also be assisting participants, too, so if you see him, make sure to say hi!.. The Walk is UCP's biggest special event of the year.. It's a day full of fun, friends and fundraising for UCP's Family Support Department.. Team Watts In the Lead For Walk, Roll 'n' Run Fundraising.. Jul 13 '11.. Team Watts is off to an astounding start fundraising for the Walk, Roll 'n' Run.. So far, they have already raised $870.. 00 towards their goal of $1,500.. Team member Marcy Watts has personally raised $720.. 00!.. Marcy and her husband, Jimmy, came to UCP when their son, Parker, was diagnosed with cerebral palsy in 2010.. As Marcy says, "Parker is a little boy with Cerebral Palsy, but most of all, he is a little boy whose smile lights up the room.. He loves music, his brother, bubbles and playing rough with his daddy.. His laugh is contagious and his hard work inspires me every day.. ".. Marcy is excited to be fundraising for UCP.. As she says, "It is an amazing organization that provides, information, support and respite to families dealing with this condition.. We would have been lost without them.. Jodie uses UCP's Supported Living services to live independently in her own home, and she also uses UCP's Community Inclusion services to get out and enjoy her community.. In particular, Jodie loves riding horseback.. She first went to Sycamore Lane Therapeutic Riding Center in October of 2010, and ever since, Jodie hasn t stopped riding nor does she ever plan to!.. Jodie has made lots of new friends, and gained all sorts of new skills.. As Ellen, one of Jodie s therapeutic riding instructors, says, When Jodie first started, she needed to have a person support her by sitting behind her on the horse.. Now, she can ride on her own and can even ride hands free! Jodie has progressed to riding more difficult horses and is working on balance and proper posture.. She is an amazing rider.. Everyone loves her dearly.. Jodie believes that anyone who enjoys horseback riding should go visit this facility..
