Contest Ended March 1, 2013 - Click.. for the winning announcement.. E.. veryone knows that robbing a bank is illegal.. But, there s no law against fantasizing about it.. Popular culture has long relied on this fantasy to promote a wide array of bank robber tales, often romanticizing the lawbreaker as a clever hero outsmarting the agents of economic oppression.. The old American West was populated with such infamous desperados as Butch Cassidy, Frank and Jesse James, and the Dalton Gang.. And, the Great Depression gave rise to the likes of Bonnie and Clyde, Pretty Boy Floyd, Slick Willie Sutton, and John Dillinger to name but a few of the most notorious.. Although the current economic conditions are frequently compared to the desperation of the depression era, many law-abiding citizens would finger banks as the biggest criminals in our society today.. Upon further scrutiny, it becomes clear that this heightened antagonism towards the big banking establishment deserves a creative outlet.. As many people battle rising unemployment, increasing food costs, exorbitant health care fees, and bank foreclosures, the get rich quick narrative comes head-to-head with the make ends meet social conditions that have cultivated the legendary heists of the past.. The Bank Heist Contest is a participatory cultural endeavor designed to  ...   people really need encouragement? • Title: Ghost Machine
Descriptive info: (version #1).. Channeling the Specters of Paranormal Politics.. The streets of Tbilisi, Georgia are haunted by a palpable past, an ever-shifting present, and an unknowable, yet all too predictable, future.. At the center of an economic and strategic proxy war between the US and Russia, Georgia is possessed by a newborn democracy that is equal parts triumphant spirits and ominous phantoms.. In the post-Soviet capitol city of Tbilisi, the remnants of remarkable architecture crumble to make way for international banks, luxury hotels, and the newly-funded Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline.. And amidst the hopes and the fears, the rubble and the glitz, comes the Ghost Machine.. An eerie mix of moans, groans, growls, and howls blares out across the city from the public-address loudspeakers mounted atop of an antique Soviet-era military vehicle.. As it creaks and rumbles down the main thoroughfare of Rustaveli Avenue, the Ghost Machine gives voice to the competing anxieties and many restless spirits gathering in the shadows.. These sonic emanations intervene in the aural landscape and provoke the living with uncanny reminders of what has been and mysterious manifestations of what yet may be.. Like the city itself, the bashed and battered truck appears to have lived many lives, having died and  ...   entire center-city is in the midst of redevelopment as the unique mix of Byzantine, Art Nouveau, and Stalinist Neoclassical architecture submits to retail chains, banks, and fast food.. At one end of the main drag, the skeleton of a massive high-rise clamors with construction workers laboring to transform the Soviet hotel-turned-refugee-camp into the new luxury Radisson.. Across the way, McDonald s faces off against Rose Revolution Square, the plaza where the non-violent Rose Revolution replaced a corrupt government with newborn democracy in 2003.. And a little further down the way, the former Institute of Marxist and Leninist Thought is being transformed into a massive 5-star hotel.. In the middle of the night, the Ghost Machine haunts each of the sites in turn, along with several others including the Ministry of Justice, City Hall, Parliament, and more.. Sleepy residents bury their heads in their sheets.. Cabbies snicker along conspiratorially.. Drunks and thugs stare slack-jawed in disbelief.. The police gather en masse to complain authoritatively.. But despite these attempts to exorcise the Ghost Machine, the ghosts themselves still haunt Tbilisi.. The Ghost Machine was created with the curatorial support of.. Lydia Matthews.. Ani Riaboshenko.. as part of.. Project One Stop.. Art Caucasus 2007 - International Arts Forum..

  • Title: Witches' Cradles
Descriptive info: In Search of an Altered State.. During the witchcraft persecutions in Europe, Inquisitors are said to have sometimes put an accused witch in a bag, which was strung up over the limb of a tree and set swinging.. When witches learnt about this punishment they experimented with it themselves and found that the sensory deprivation or confusion of senses induced hallucinatory experiences.. A similar swinging motion has long been used by shamans and dervishes and is sometimes known as dervish-dangling.. - Encyclopedia of Occultism and Parapsychology.. D.. evised initially for interrogation and torture, the witches cradle was eventually reclaimed by its potential victims for flights of fancy and inward journeys to altered states of consciousness.. Since then, the past 100 years alone have shown us an array of antecedents that cast both shadows and light on the witches cradle,  ...   for Tactical Magic s re-envisioning of the witches cradle plays on these historical notes while suggesting a present-day desire to conjure positive transformation.. Each cradle consists of a large 5-pointed star designed to simultaneously evoke its magical origins, imperial state power, and a cosmic source of light amidst darkness.. After sitting in the center pentagon, the points of the star close overhead as the cradle is hoisted off the ground, allowing the participant to swing gently in the darkened center of the collapsed star.. Like a black hole, a holding cell, or a metaphysical amusement ride, the Witches Cradles distort time and space.. It is at this event horizon that the Witches Cradles create a place where one can begin to realize an altered state (of consciousness, or an altered political state) and contemplate the next course of action..

  • Title: Transporter
Descriptive info: A Social Witches' Cradle.. he concept of the Transporter is based on the old medieval torture device known as a witch's cradle , in which an accused witch would be placed in a sack and hung from a tree.. The sensory deprivation experience would induce visions and hallucinations that were thought to punish the witch.. However, in the 1960's and 70's people began experimenting with altered states for less disciplinary reasons.. During this period, the magic bus also became an iconic site for such activity.. In this vehicular version of the witches' cradle we are replacing the sack with a microbus, specifically a 1969 VW Transporter.. The windows will be entirely blacked out, and visitors will be invited to climb inside the darkened interior and recline on one of the waterbeds.. On the outside others can push and swing the bus around as it is suspended just slightly off the ground.. qual parts metaphysical technology, urban amusement ride, and a subversion of use-value, the Transporter is a sort of  ...   rebuilds itself in an effort to maintain hegemony.. At the other end of the equation, the idealized magic bus of 68 represents a free-wheeling, sub-cultural drive towards a more autonomous, optimistic and empowered society.. W.. hile the crane s cable essentially tethers the bus, limiting its movement, it also enables it to perform the impossible and transcend the physical laws that usually keep it grounded.. Although it floats just slightly off the ground, the suspension is enough to allow free movement in any direction with little effort.. he journeys that travelers have taken over the years in these buses have often extended beyond the borders of nation-states and into the far reaches of altered states of consciousness.. Accommodating multiple people at a time, our new vision of the Transporter is a social witches cradle designed to continue the journey and deliver its passengers to magical destinations within the socio-political landscape and beyond.. The Transporter was created with the support of.. and the Victor E.. Ferrall, Jr.. Endowed Artist-in-Residence program..

L.. ove is a Souvenir.. is a public intervention designed to engage the debate surrounding the New York Police Department s Stop Frisk policies.. R.. ecognizing the role of street vendors as NY s frontline cultural ambassadors, more than 100 souvenir vendors in a concentrated zone of tourism were asked to participate in this project by hanging a protest sign, in the form of a t-shirt, alongside their wares (i.. e.. , I love NY shirts, Statue of Liberty hats, NYPD branded items, etc).. he main geographic focus of this project was Battery Park - near the  ...   of the vendors in this particular area are African-American veterans who work everyday selling items that promote NY s public image as a place characterized by love, liberty, and respect..
