Congress amended the Compact in 1980, with public law 96-551, which also established the Tahoe Transportation District (TTD).. PROJECTS MAP.. TAHOE PROTECTION.. Clarity is the most obvious sign of Lake Tahoe's health.. It has declined by over 30% in the past 40 years as the number of Basin residents and visitors has increased.. Why?.. Although 63 streams and tributaries flow into Tahoe, only one flows out.. Fine sediments from the area's fragile watershed travel this network, remaining suspended in the water, creating cloudiness..     Descriptive info: With over 3,000,000 visitors per year and counting, the need to maximize Tahoe Basin and region transit efficiency, while minimizing its impact on the environment, is becoming increasingly critical.. PLANNED 2013 CONSTRUCTION.. TM.. , South Demonstration Project, Phase II.. With construction started this summer, this 1.. 1-mile segment of the 3.. 2-mile route will connect Elks Point Rd.. to Round Hill Pines Beach and Lodge.. $2.. 5 million in funding has been secured.. more.. UNDER EVALUATION/CONSIDERATION.. This joint undertaking, with local, state, federal and private participation, will provide safer, upgraded biking and walking choices, decreasing private car use, improving air and water quality and protecting the natural environment.. It will retrofit and connect existing trail segments with approximately 162 miles of new construction to create a complete network.. Meeks Bay Resort to Sugar Pine Point State Park.. Alternative alignments are being considered for this Class 1 Bike Path on Lake Tahoe's west shore.. Construction of the eight-foot-wide path is tentatively scheduled for the 2013 season, pending funding.. North Demonstration Project.. Preliminary engineering and environmental assessment is ongoing for alternatives being proposed for a 3-mile off-road bikeway between Incline Village and Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park-Sand Harbor.. Providing safe bicycle/pedestrian access to popular beaches/recreation in this area would also be an important step to reducing vehicle and shoulder-parking impacts on the environment.. South Demonstration Project, Phase III.. The final 1.. 1-mile segment of this bike path is scheduled to be designed in 2013 and built during the 2014 construction season (to coincide with US 50 improvements).. It will connect Kahle Dr.. to Lake Parkway, accessing Stateline's commercial core..  ...   reclassification from federal highway to local street status that would provide for local area control and development of a “main street.. ” Various alternatives are currently being vetted through the public process for the Environmental Impact Study (EIS) with a decision to come after the EIS is completed.. Public workshops for community input are in progress regarding the possibility of rebuilding or replacing the historic bridge that crosses the Truckee River and realigning SR 89 heading into Tahoe City.. The project addresses present and future travel demands, traffic congestion and safety concerns, and the need for two viable emergency evacuation routes from the West Shore.. TRANSIT SERVICES AND FACILITIES.. South Lake Tahoe Bus Shelters.. Continuing a program of phased construction, several new shelters will be installed in 2013.. The structures will enhance rider comfort and safety while adding visibility to encourage transit system use.. The new shelters are funded with service revenues, federal transit subsidies and state and private-sector support.. Truckee-North Tahoe Ski Shuttle Service.. 2012-13 is the first season for this free alternative to private-car use.. The TTD is facilitating a partnership between the North Lake Tahoe Resort Association and the Truckee North Tahoe Transit Management Association to connect the Tahoe Basin, Truckee and the I-80 corridor ski resorts.. East Shore Express Shuttle and Parking.. Responding to concerns about safety, congestion and erosion along SR 28, TTD is facilitating testing this service from mid-June through Labor Day.. With over 12,000 riders in 2012, its first season, the service was tested again in 2013.. The shuttle will operate between a temporary Incline Village terminus and Sand Harbor beaches..
