  • Title: Autumn Statement confirms funding for free school meals
Descriptive info: 05 December 2013.. The Chancellor’s Autumn Statement has confirmed funding for universal free school meals for reception, Year 1 and Year 2 children from September 2014.. Today’s announcement pledged £450m revenue funding in 2014/15 and £635m in 2015/16, as well as £150m of capital which will be made available to ensure school dining facilities are sufficiently equipped, enabling them to make necessary changes by building new kitchens or increasing dining capacity.. Whilst this announcement is a welcome step in the right direction for school food, it is crucial that the quality of meals provided meets the expectations of children and parents.. It is important that parents, pupils and staff are provided with reassurance about the standard and traceability of the food being served.. This is a key factor in encouraging widespread take-up of these free school meals, and to see the resulting positive impact on pupils’ health and attainment that daily fresh and healthy meals can effect.. The Soil Association's.. is already working with over 20% of UK schools to provide a guarantee to staff, pupils and parents that the food they are eating each day meets high standards of freshness, quality and provenance.. School caterers are serving nearly 700,000 meals in UK schools each day which meet the Catering Mark Standards – which has typically been achieved without any increase in meal price, and which has  ...   additives and trans fats.. As such, it is well placed to build on the existing commitment for free school meals to meet the school food standards, to mitigate any risk of downward pressure on meal quality, and encourage extensive uptake of free school meals.. Another key to the success of this initiative - in line with the recommendations of the national School Food Plan – is for Head teachers to throw their support behind healthy school meals via a.. ‘whole school approach’.. – putting food at the heart of the school day and involving pupils in cooking, growing and learning where their food comes from.. Evidence.. from the Soil Association-led Food for Life Partnership shows that schools adopting a whole school approach to food - together with pupils eating Catering Mark Standard meals - can expect to see a significant increase in school meal take-up.. Today’s announcement has underwritten what has been an exciting few months for school food.. We are seeing more and more examples of best-practice across the sector as the link between good food and food education, good health and good attainment becomes increasingly recognised.. We are keen to support caterers to use this opportunity to get the best out of their meal service – and to draw on.. existing examples.. which are demonstrating that this can be achieved without compromising on cost or quality..
