The report will be distributed and available on the SAC website before year's end.. Mines Advisory Group continues field work in Warrap, Lakes and Central Equatoria.. Surveying in seven states has been completed (East Equatoria, Blue Nile, Kassal, North Bahr el Ghazal, Gadaref, Sennar, and Red Sea).. The SAC Board of Directors concluded a tendering process for the next phase of the LIS in Sudan and approved Handicap International  ...   from Canada (CIDA/ACDI) SAC is developing a small project to explore land release, or land cancellation.. Bob traveled to MAG and HALO headquarters to discuss this issue and also met in Scotland with Martin Barber, retired UNMAS chief.. SAC then convened a one day session in Jordan at the time of the Meeting of States Parties for a broader discussion by NGOs on this issue.. Bob Eaton represented SAC and made a presentation at the Workshop, convened in Sarajevo by Handicap International on Development and Mine Action..

The final report has been drafted and is being reviewed by UNDP and the Somaliland and Puntland Mine Action Centers.. The project is building on the current analytical work of the Survey Action Center to build a statistically sound model that will permit national authorities to use LIS data to project probabilities of future mine incidents in communities identified by the LIS..  ...   the LIS in Angola, Afghanistan and Eritrea to test the statistical validity of several scenarios that include variables not covered in the SWG protocol on impact scoring..     Descriptive info: September 2007.. 9.. With funding from Canada, SAC will conduct an enhanced Preliminary Opinion Collection to the district level in 2008.. Field work completed.. Final report drafted and being reviewed by UNDP and the Somaliland and Puntland Mine Action Centers.. The LIS report for Eastern Sudan was distributed in Sudan in September and is currently available on the SAC website.. Soon the Sudan database will be available on the LIS Explorer so the data can be searched, filtered and mapped from the SAC web site (see links below under the "LIS Explorer Upgrade" section).. Bob Keeley, on behalf of SAC, conducted field research in Angola and Afghanistan to develop economic decision support tools for use in mine action.. The Excel spreadsheet-based tools will bring to bear economic analysis to assist planners in determining the size of a mine action programs and the mix of different resources to deploy and the most economical distribution of resources throughout the country.. The analysis will build on LIS data and utilize economic data sets from other sectors for the economy.. The final report will be available in December.. The new LIS Explorer upgrade is now available from the SAC website (.. It includes databases from Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Chad, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Thailand, Somalia, and Yemen.. The Sudan database will be added in October with subsequent updates as the data is acquired for this on-going survey..

    Descriptive info: March 2007.. 3.. INAD begins field work in Cabinda.. Planning begins for final report writing in Luanda at the end of April.. With funding from Canada, SAC will conduct an enhanced Preliminary Opinion Collection to the district level in 2007.. The field work Sanaag and Sool from the Somaliland side has been completed.. In April the field work will resume from the Puntland side of the regions.. It is projected the fieldwork for the survey will be completed by the end of May.. Michael Fleisher completes field work in Angola researching informal village demining and returns to Takoma Park to debrief SAC and write up his findings.. Final testing of LIS Explorer upgrade continues.. Four new country databases have been added and improvements have been made to the user interface and system performance.. The upgrade will be available on the SAC website in April.. Executive Director, Bob Eaton, attends the National Program Directors Meeting in Geneva sponsored by the United Nations..

Subcontractor ThinkGeo LLC of Lawrence, Kansas has released the upgrade of the LIS Explorer for final testing.. The completed upgrade should be posted on the SAC website in March.. SAC, Marshall Legacy Institute, and James Madison University Mine Action Information Center are researching key mine affected countries..
