When Rocio Jiménez moved to Southern Oregon from Mexico, she decided to help clean up her neighborhood and to "volunteer for many years in the Jackson Elementary School, helping the teachers with different groups and activities" and "reading books to the kids in kindergarten.. Flying to Be Somebody: The Forgotten Story of Pioneer Aviator Eugene Ely.. " as the next topic in the 2013 "Windows in Time" history series.. Lectures are at.. noon on Wednesday, June 5.. , at the Medford Branch Library, 205 South Central Avenue, and.. Wednesday.. ,.. June 12.. , at the Ashland Branch Library, 410 Siskiyou Boulevard.. Local historian and Mail Tribune history columnist, Bill Miller, will give an illustrated presentation detailing the life of the first man to ever dare a takeoff and landing on a naval ship, with emphasis on Ely's two exhibition flights in Medford in 1910 and 1911.. Wanting to make something of his life, Ely taught himself to fly.. But like so many pioneers, the what, why, and how of his life have all but disappeared.. Shortly after 25-year-old Ely captured the world's eye and gained the fame he and his wife sought, he smashed into the earth and was dead.. The monthly "Windows in Time" lectures are offered at no cost to the public and are jointly sponsored by the Southern Oregon Historical Society and Jackson County Library Services.. SOHS #1537.. “Rhythm of the Rails: The Golden Age of Railroading in Jackson County, 1890 -1926” will cover the exciting time of the railroad’s advent in Jackson County to the completion of the Natron Cutoff in 1926.. The exhibit opens at the Railroad Show at the Medford Armory on November 24-25, 10 am - 5 pm on Saturday and 11 am - 4 pm on Sunday.. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, and $2 for children.. On November 28, "Rhythm of the Rails" opens at.. the Ashland Historic Railroad Museum for December and January.. The AHRM is hosting an opening reception for the exhibit on Saturday, December 1 at 6 pm.. "Rhythm of the Rails" is part of SOHS's History: Made by You innovative traveling exhibit program..     Descriptive info: Artifact Collections.. Our collection is an estimated 1,000,000 artifacts that document human settlement in the seven county region of Southern Oregon.. Our artifacts include tools and baskets made by the Native American tribes who lived in the region, quilts brought here in covered wagons by pioneers who traveled on the Oregon Trail, and items that reflect contemporary life.. We currently do not operate a museum due to.. budget limitations.. Various artifacts may be displayed in our.. temporary exhibits.. , and many items in the SOHS collection are included in.. our online catalog.. Deaccessioning.. Like many historical societies, when the Southern Oregon Historical Society first started collecting artifacts, it did not have a collections policy to guide its activities.. As a result, we have many artifacts in our collection that are not representative of southern Oregon.. Common practice was to invite the community to bring in whatever objects they had in their houses that might be of interest to other people; that included  ...   make this decision is lengthy - any artifact suggested for deaccessioning by staff curators gets reviewed by the Collections Committee and then gets voted on by the Board of Trustees.. If the vote is positive, deaccessioned artifacts may be removed from the collection in four ways:.. 1) The item may be given or traded with a nonprofit organization.. 2) The items may be sold to a nonprofit organization.. 3) The item may be sold at a public auction.. 4) The item may be disposed of if it is hazardous or in extremely poor condition.. The proceeds from sold deaccessioned artifacts must be used for the direct care of collections, like improving the conditions in our collections storage facility, cleaning artifacts, or digitizing our records so our collection is more easily accessible by the public..
