Descriptive info: Home.. SAC Program.. How It Works.. Costs.. Become a Coach.. Success Stories.. Research.. Standards-Aligned.. Lesson Plans.. Introducing the Standards-Aligned Classroom Initiative.. the success story that s transforming teachers and students throughout Illinois.. No matter how many years you have been teaching, the Standards-Aligned Classroom Initiative (SAC) can fundamentally change your entire classroom experience.. When you enroll in the SAC program, you will be joining one of the fastest-growing and highest-performing movements in education today.. At this very moment, thousands of teachers in Illinois are embracing SAC methodologies, and are experiencing its unique ability to:.. Instill educators with a greater sense of confidence in the classroom.. Accelerate student achievement and motivation.. Create a more powerful overall learning experience for everyone involved.. Even the most seasoned professional educators are employing SAC s innovative strategies, tools, and insights to create their own SAC success story within their schools.. I have witnessed drastic improvements in my students overall approach to the learning process, as well as in their overall performance.. Peggy Leigh, 6th-grade teacher, Pontiac, Illinois.. A better approach to assessment.. Admittedly, it is not easy for teachers to immediately become acclimated to involving students in the assessment process.. It is also a new experience for teachers when they employ these results to give students feedback and then adjust classroom instruction.. However, in classrooms where these methods are practiced, students invariably become more engaged in  ...   simply been better for the kids.. They have more confidence and they feel more empowered.. Jeremy Ricken, Principal, East View Elementary School.. SAC has proven successful in raising student achievement.. With SAC, teachers have become more effective, and ISATs have gone up.. It really took our curriculum to the next level.. Neil Sappington, Superintendent, Galesburg Unit School District #205.. Every year, literally hundreds of new programs flood the market proclaiming revolutionary new teaching methods.. They guarantee a quick fix that can transform you into a better teacher with more successful students.. Sadly, every year, many of these quick fixes fail.. SAC, however, is anything but a quick fix.. SAC offers a rigorously tested, research-based teaching program featuring proven strategies for aligning classroom instruction and assessment to the Illinois Learning Standards.. The program s inherent strength lies in its ability to involve both teachers and students in the standards process by empowering them to create high-quality classroom assessments together.. Research has shown that when teachers partner with students to develop clear learning targets, then follow up with classroom lessons structured to achieve these targets, students are more engaged and do better overall.. SAC earns high marks from principals and teachers.. Make no mistake.. Participating in the SAC Initiative requires hard work, dedication, and a real commitment of time.. But these efforts are repaid in rewards that will last the rest of your career..

  • Title: Standards-Aligned Classroom Initiative
Descriptive info: About Us.. Background.. The Standards-Aligned Classroom Initiative (SAC) is the first undertaken by the Statewide System for Professional Development.. The Standards-Aligned Classroom Initiative was developed by the Regional Offices of Education (ROEs) and Intermediate Service Centers (ISCs) in Illinois, in collaboration with and funded by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE).. The Standards-Aligned Classroom Initiative was created to address the need for teachers to engage in meaningful staff development and study in order to impact the work of teachers and students on a day-to-day basis, so as to create measurable changes in the classroom.. This Initiative does not primarily address Aligning Curriculum at the School or District-level to the Standards.. While that process may provide value, it has not proven to impact classroom level work on a day-to-day basis, and that is why the Standards-Aligned Classroom Initiative was created.. There are a number of key components in this professional development model.. All based on what research has shown to be qualities of effective staff development:.. The training portion of SAC is job-embedded.. That means participants' studying, learning and doing occurs in the context of real work being done by teachers in their classrooms.. Participants work and study together in school-based learning teams.. They study texts and workbooks on standards-aligned lessons and assessments, and share their classroom practices, trials, errors, and successes.. Evidence-based curricular models, resources, assessment and instruction methods are studied throughout the year by participants in SAC.. The SAC Design Team has implemented world-class instructional design people and processes.. The Design Team has also worked closely with Dr.. Rick Stiggins of the Assessment Training Institute, and has chosen Dr.. Stiggins texts to be a part of the SAC curriculum.. The Design Team has also engaged the talents and expertise of dozens of experienced staff developers, curriculum experts, and instructional designers from the ROEs and ISCs.. The Team has also called upon independent consultants, members of the ISBE staff, practicing administrators and, of course, classroom teachers.. More than six months were dedicated to designing and developing the training process, training materials, and training the trainers and coaches.. All SAC materials have been extensively piloted and they continue to undergo annual reviews and revision.. Teachers participating in this Initiative may attend Alignment and Assessment Conferences held throughout the State.. They may also attend keynote presentations by nationally recognized experts in assessment and standards.. Participants share the products of their work with other teams at  ...   [.. view test results.. ].. Who's Who in SAC.. This professional development program was designed by an instructional Design Team, appointed by the Professional Development Committee of the Illinois Association of Regional Superintendents of Schools.. The chair of the Statewide Design Team is Dr.. Jay Linksman, Executive Director of the Professional Development Alliance, an agency of the Regional Offices of Education in Will and Grundy/Kendall Counties.. The members of the Design team are: Vicki Hensley, ROE 32; Marie Joy, ROE 10; Marjorie Cave, ROE 19; Kevin Seymour, ROEs 9 and 54; Kay Poyner-Brown, West Cook ISC, ROE 55; Donnette Nailor.. The Project Manager for the Standards Aligned Classroom Initiative is Penny Murphy, whose office is located at the Two Rivers Professional Development Center, Edwards, IL.. A team of writers and designers developed the training, materials and manuals delivered statewide through the Regional Offices of Education and Intermediate Service Centers.. The members of the writing team have included:.. Jay Linksman, Chair, Professional Development Alliance, ROEs 56 and 24; Penny Murphy, Project Manager for Standards-Aligned Classroom Initiative; Richard Carlson, Illinois State Board of Education; Adrianne Roggenbuck, Professional Development Alliance; Cheri Leveling, Professional Development Alliance; Lori Loving, Two Rivers Professional Development Center; Dr.. The Design Team gratefully acknowledges Rick Stiggins and Judy Arter of the Assessment Training Institute of Portland, Oregon, for their assistance in developing the assessment learning team process and for supplying the writers with insights based on their research and experience working with school-based teams.. Finally, acknowledgements are due to Dr.. Christopher Koch, State Superintendent, and Joyce Krumtinger, Curriculum and Instruction Division, key members of the Illinois State Board of Education whose leadership and commitment to Standards-Aligned Classrooms have been unwavering..

Descriptive info: Sponsorship.. Your donation will not help a single student.. It will help hundreds.. SAC.. The success story that is sweeping across Illinois.. The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), passed by the U.. S.. Congress in 2001, is one of the federal government s most sweeping changes to education in a generation.. The details of the NCLB Act affect every school, every classroom, and every student in Illinois.. While the intentions of NCLB are well-meaning, school systems throughout Illinois are left on their own to find the resources needed to meet the rigorous standards of NCLB by earning passing grades on the Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT).. The harsh reality is that over the next year, thousands of schools will be added to our State s list of Failing schools.. This stigma will adversely affect the job status of countless educators as well as the future of our State s children.. However, there is a way  ...   rediscovering their passion for teaching, students are finding a new sense of motivation and, most importantly, schools all over Illinois are getting the help they need to improve student test scores.. Before we can bring SAC to every classroom, we need to bring SAC to every teacher.. We invite you to support SAC s efforts to align classroom instruction and assessment to the Illinois Learning Standards and to more deeply involve students in their own learning and assessment.. Your contributions will enable local schools to send a Learning Team, or even an entire staff, through SAC training.. By offering your support, you will be bringing the latest in standards-led education into the classroom and helping an entire school and generations of students find a better path to success.. For additional information on how you can help bring SAC into your community s schools, please contact your local.. Regional Office of Education.. or the.. SAC Project Manager..

As an educator, you are called upon to teach to the Illinois Learning Standards, but you have not been trained to interpret what the Standards mean for your classroom's specific grade level and syllabus content.. SAC can provide you with the tools you need to clearly determine teaching and learning targets.. In addition to the standards, what else is taught during the SAC training and year(s) of study?.. The Learning Teams study appropriate classroom assessments and then learn how to align those assessments and their student's performance to the Standards.. As a national faculty, teachers are largely untrained in assessment.. Most educators have not had course work to teach them how to design or select appropriate classroom assessments for their students.. How will  ...   the team 8 to 10 times each year to facilitate and assist the study of the team.. What makes SAC different from the other professional development opportunities that are available to teachers?.. SAC participants work and study together in Learning Teams.. These teams meet with a coach in their own building to provide support throughout the process.. The framework is in place for real systemic change to support any school improvement plan.. Is the SAC Initiative research-based?.. Yes, the SAC Initiative is based on the research and work of the foremost expert in assessment-based instruction, Dr.. Richard Stiggins, President of the Assessment Training Institute of Portland.. In addition, the findings in Black and Wiliam s Inside the Black Box - Raising Standards Through Class Assessment, have provided SAC with strong evidence that involving students in the assessment process can increase student achievement.. SAC has also recently conducted an independent assessment of the Initiative through MetriTech, Inc.. and Dr.. Ed Wolfe of Michigan State University.. The results were quite conclusive that, overall, teachers who have adopted the SAC principles felt much more positive towards standards-aligned instruction and the Illinois Learning Standards.. More information on this independent study can be found.. here.. What kind of credit is available, if any, to educators who participate in SAC?.. Both Level I (first year), and Level II (second year) participants are eligible to receive 3 hours of graduate credit.. The Level I and Level II teams study.. Classroom Assessment for Student Learning.. by Dr.. Richard Stiggins.. CPDU credit and Administrator Academy credit are available.. What does it cost to participate in SAC?.. SAC is funded by both state and federal grants.. The majority of the teams are supported through the SAC funds at no cost to the teacher or school, with the exception of the graduate credit fee.. Many schools also choose to fund the Initiative through.. Title grant funds, RESPRO or ASPIRE professional development funds, and school improvement funds.. Your local educational office can assist you with this information.. How can I access SAC lesson plans?.. to view SAC lessons plans at ISBE's web site.. For additional information, please contact..
