Descriptive info: UN experts call on world leaders to act on FTT.. As European Union Finance Ministers meet on 15 May, coinciding with the G-8 Summit in Camp David, United Nations experts have urged the EU to take the lead in promoting a global financial transaction tax to deal with enduring economic, financial, fuel, climate and food crises, and to protect basic human rights.. “Where the world financial crisis has brought about the loss of millions of jobs, socialized private debt burdens and now risks causing significant human rights regressions through wide-ranging austerity packages, a financial transaction tax (FTT) is a pragmatic tool for providing the means for governments to protect and fulfill the human rights of their people,” said the independent group of expert.. “EU countries must take bold leadership now to pave the way towards what should eventually be a global FTT,” they urged, welcoming recent EU proposals to implement the financial transaction tax across the Eurozone.. “When the  ...   tax burden.. ”.. Estimates suggest that at its lowest rate the FTT would yield about $48 billion across the G20, with higher rates offering up to $250 billion dollars per year to offset the costs of the enduring economic, financial, fuel, climate and food crises.. Countries such as South Korea have implemented such taxes in non-discriminatory ways to raise significant resources to provide the means to achieve the right to development.. It would also help stabilize financial markets by discouraging speculation, mitigating the type of volatility which spawned the 2008 financial and food crises.. “A global FTT is not a silver bullet,” warned the UN Independent Expert on Foreign Debt and Human Rights, Cephas Lumina, “but it would help relieve sovereign debt load stemming from the financial crisis, shift the burden from ordinary citizens to the private sector which caused the crisis, and significantly enlarge government fiscal space for spending on desperately needed economic and social rights programmes.. org/news/un-experts-call-world-leaders-act-ftt..

Descriptive info: Busting the myths about the FTT.. A new.. research paper.. says a Financial Transaction Tax (FTT) would generate substantial new revenue from the sector whose greed and recklessness caused the 2008 financial meltdown – an economic crisis that continues to affect people around the world.. The costs of the crisis have been huge.. At the end of December 2009, G-20 nations had spent $1,976 billion – equivalent to 6.. 2% of world GDP – to bail out financial institutions.. (IMF, 2010).. In Europe and North America, ordinary citizens, with no responsibility for creating the crisis, have borne the costs with job losses and cuts to public services.. FTTs are one of the few available options that could generate financial resources in sufficient quantity to make a meaningful contribution to the continuing costs of the global economic crisis.. This would ensure the currently under‐taxed financial sector pay a greater and fairer share of the costs that their actions caused.. The FTT would also help to regulate markets, curbing speculative market behavior and short‐termism, and instead encourage more sustainable and equitable long‐term economic growth.. There is growing international support for the FTT, but some vocal opponents continue to peddle a series of untrue myths concerning its impact.. • Title: UN report calls on governments to act on jobs and quality public services
Descriptive info: UN report calls on governments to act on jobs and quality public services.. Amid growing evidence that government austerity measures will deepen the world-wide economic recession, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has called on governments to act on job creation and the universal social protection provided through quality public services.. The call comes in a report to the UN Commission on Social Development, which is meeting in New York from 1 – 10 February.. The report notes that, “for economic growth to contribute to poverty reduction, macroeconomic and social policies should focus on job creation, reducing inequalities and providing social protection.. “The trends towards austerity in response to the debt crisis, if not reversed, will worsen inequality and exclusion and ultimately dampen prospects for  ...   UN’s call to deliver decent incomes and security, and the protection of international labour standards,” said Sharan Burrow, General Secretary of ITUC.. The report acknowledges that the economic policies advocated by international financial institutions over the last three decades – deregulation, liberalization and privatization – have failed to address the root causes of poverty.. It also reinforces the trade union view that increasing workers’ bargaining power has a positive impact on reducing poverty and inequality, and that “the provision of minimum wages and employment protection can be important tools for an equitable distribution of productive opportunities and inclusive growth.. Importantly, the report recommends that governments consider the implementation of national social protection floors as a means to provide systemic insurance against poverty for all.. org/news/un-report-calls-governments-act-jobs-and-quality-public-services..
