Mary's County Public Schools is proud to announce that Elizabeth "Lisa" Powell, a special education teacher at Greenview Knolls Elementary School, has been named the Sam Kirk Educator of the Year.. This award is offered by the Learning Disabilities Association of America in order to recognize at the national level the contribution of an exceptional educator to individuals with learning disabilities.. In addition to her 20 years of service as a teacher of students with special needs, Ms.. Powell is also the special education department chairperson at her school,  ...   Public Library.. Powell was a member of a grant writing group at Greenview Knolls Elementary School that wrote and received a sizable grant from Dominion Power focused on assisting students with disabilities, lower income students, and minorities to become more successful in science and math.. She has been a guest lecturer to multiple organizations, raising awareness and advocating for those she serves.. Lisa Powell is an exceptional educator and I am so proud of the work that she does for all young people , stated Dr.. Michael J.. Martirano, Superintendent of Schools.. As the recipient of this award, Ms.. Powell has been invited to attend this year s LDA International Conference where she will be honored..
