    Descriptive info: In July of 1951, after the abdication of his father, Prince Baudouin became the fifth king of the Belgians.. Before becoming king, Prince Baudouin had had a difficult youth.. A few years after his mother, Queen Astrid, died in a car accident, the Nazi invasion forced him to leave Belgium with his family and spend much of the Second World War in exile in Switzerland.. King Baudouin’s reign was marked by profound economic and social changes, the decolonization of the Congo, and the political transformation of Belgium from a unitary to  ...   European integration.. In 1976, during the festivities marking the 25th anniversary of his accession to the throne, King Baudouin made it known that he did not wish to receive personal gifts..
