Title: Keystone Paralyzed Veterans of America Descriptive info: About PVA, the Keystone Chapter and our mission.. Support paralyzed vets.. Welcome to the Keystone Paralyzed Veterans of America.. The Keystone Paralyzed Veterans of America is one of 34 chartered chapters of the Paralyzed Veterans of America in the United States.. The chapter was founded in 1960.. People are usually surprised to know that the U.. S.. government and the Department of Veterans Affairs do not provide for all the needs of veterans, even those who have been disabled or paralyzed.. In fact, many of those services that.. are.. provided.. did not exist until veterans service organizations, the PVA among them.. , worked with Congress and the VA to put those services into place.. And we work every day to try to make those services better and meet the changing needs.. The Paralyzed Veterans of America, founded in 1946, is a Congressionally chartered veterans' service organization that has developed a unique expertise on many issues relating to the special needs of its members--veterans of the armed services who have experienced spinal cord injury or dysfunction.. What does the PVA do?.. The PVA uses this expertise to be the leading advocate for:.. Quality health care for its members,.. Research and education addressing spinal cord injury ... members.. The Board of Directors is completely made up of paralyzed veterans.. They and other PVA members contact public officials to inform them of the needs of paralyzed vets.. They visit other veterans in the VA medical centers and in other medical facilities to try to get them the best care available.. They encourage their fellow vets to get active and involved in life activities that may not have been possible a generation ago.. You can help them by volunteering your time!.. Contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Agnes Strang, by calling the Keystone PVA offices, 800-775-9323 or 412-781-2474.. You can help with your financial support!.. Keystone Paralyzed Veterans of America is a non-profit organization that relies completely on contributions made from the general public.. If you wish to charge for the item(s), our ad rates are quite reasonable.. and scroll down to find recent copies of our newsletter, The Parascope, with the ad rates listed within.. Some additional information.. To operate as a legitimate nonprofit charitable organization, Keystone PVA must meet the standards of our parent organization, the.. , which requires an annual audit conducted by an independent third party.. Keystone PVA must report its finances annually to the U.. Internal Revenue Service, which must meet the standards of the IRS Code Section 501(C)(3).. Keystone PVA files a Form 990 annually with the IRS.. Keystone PVA is also registered with the Bureau of Charitable Organizations in the Department of State of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and reports annually and pays a registration fee to that agency.. In considering charities and other nonprofits, you might wish to check out.. GuideStar.. , which has information, including the most recently-filed IRS Forms 990, on nearly two million nonprofits.. Also consider the web site of the.. Better Business Bureau.. It is our policy to follow up any donation with a written acknowledgement for your tax records.. Your donation is tax-deductible for federal tax purposes if you itemize your donations.. Depending on the state in which you file your state income tax and the method by which you file, your donation may be tax-deductible for state tax purposes.. How much do we appreciate your generosity?.. We appreciate every dime, and it doesn't really take that much to serve Pennsylvania's paralyzed veterans.. If only one out of every 120 Pennsylvanians donated $3 each year, we could get the job done!.. But the best type of generosity is the unsolicited type.. Fundraising is very expensive!.. The costs of fundraising are greatly misunderstood.. It's not unusual for active fundraising to cost a very large percentage of the money raised.. At the same time, a charity has to reach out, and outreach--calling by phone, sending mail, even organizing drives through social media--isn't even close to free.. It's good to have volunteers, but fundraising is a skilled job, and training costs money, too..

Title: Keystone Paralyzed Veterans of America Descriptive info: Keystone PVA's Sports and Recreation program is the most expensive part of what we do.. The most expensive part of that is the annual National Veterans Wheelchair Games.. We send approximately 15 to 18 athletes each year at a cost per athlete of $1,400 to $2,250, which cover's the athlete's travel, lodging, meals not provided by the host committee of the Games, and incidentals.. A little background.. After proper medical treatment and family support, the most important element in a paralyzed vet's recovery is activity.. While some of that is provided by VA-sponsored therapies, Keystone PVA fills in gaps and gives those vets choices and incentives to get moving, helping themselves and often their fellow veterans.. Keystone PVA subsidizes or (usually) underwrites those activities, providing they are certified by us.. Those activities range from bowling to hunting game, from social events to the events of the Wheelchair Games.. Most paralyzed vets receive marginal disability benefits that just keep their heads above water; Keystone PVA provides the extras that give them shots at a fuller lives.. Keystone PVA has created a Sports and Recreation Points System that awards points on a scale that starts with attending chapter meetings and getting annual medical exams to the challenges of the Wheelchair Games.. The Games are the top of the pyramid.. This program, like all of the work of Keystone PVA, is NOT taxpayer-supported.. Keystone PVA is NOT a part of the U..
