Media and Communication Studies and the Master Programme Global Journalism at Örebro University have organized.. Global Journalism Day.. (GJD) on May 15, 2012 to bring attention to the growing significance of studying and practicing global journalism in today's globalizing and fast-paced world, where communication is at the core of the struggle to maintain as well as obtain democracy, in particular nations as well as  ...   ICTs to share and publish information globally, the GJD intends to reflect on the importance of understanding where journalists fit and how they should view their work in relation to the globe as well as to certain demographic or geographic contexts.. It served as an opportunity for participants from different countries (developed and developing) to share ideas and compare experiences and to promote theoretical development as well as professional development and cooperation.. It also served as a venue to introduce work produced by Global Journalism Master students.. By bringing journalists, researchers, students and other interested persons from across the world to debate global journalism, the event has served to promote the study of this new and evolving field.. Although the event was open to all, the main beneficiaries of the GJD were academics interested in journalism and communication as well as journalists and media practitioners.. A distinguished radio producer and reporter Sveriges Radio in Örebro.. Karwan was born 1961 in the city of Sulaimaniyah in the Kurdistan region of Iraq.. He studied in the Technological University of Baghdad and worked as a journalist in northern Iraq until he left for Russia to study journalism.. He came to Sweden 1991 and he has been working as a reporter and producer in Swedish Radio for the last decade covering domestic and foreign affairs.. Karwan speaks several languages including Kurdish, Arabic, Russian and he is interested in political developments and the media in Arab countries.. Ahmed is a lecturer in Media and Communication Studies at Örebro University in Sweden.. He has been studying the development of information and communication technology in Egypt and the significance of technology not only for news desks but also for society in general and how it paved the way for the Egyptian 2011 revolution.. Ahmed is also co-managing the new master programme.. Journalism Connected.. along with Peter Berglez.. A Yemeni journalist, software developer, activist and media scholar currently directing the Master of Global Journalism programme at Örebro University in Sweden.. Al-Saqaf is known for founding Yemen Portal, an aggregator for content on Yemen and also for developing Alkasir, a software program aimed at mapping and circumventing censorship worldwide.. His role in supporting freedom of expression particularly in the Arab world won him several awards including a TED 2012 Senior Fellowship..
