  • Title: volunteer with animals and children in south africa - Daktari Bush School and Wildlife Orphanage
Descriptive info: Volunteer with children and animals.. Join Us To Volunteer With Children And Animals.. Would you like to get hands-on experience with injured and orphaned wild animals whilst educating local underprivileged children, perhaps giving both of them a brighter future? At Daktari Bush School Wildlife Orphanage this is exactly what you can do!.. You can join us for an experience of a lifetime, an internship, a gap year, or just a holiday!.. The Daktari Reserve.. Daktari is set in a beautiful nature reserve with granite hills and the most stunning views.. Leopard, hyena, impala, kudu, wildebeest, zebra and giraffe roam freely within our grounds.. The camp itself is located in the heart of the reserve and it is here you will mostly work with the children and enclosed animals.. We are located in the middle of the bush and so the camp is rustic, although we do our very best to make sure everyone is kept clean, comfortable and well fed.. Our volunteers are often pleasantly surprised at the nice conditions when they arrive.. Whether you are away from home for the first time or an experienced volunteer, you will love the family atmosphere at Daktari.. Your help will make a huge difference in aiding conservation and animal welfare, teaching local underprivileged children and building bridges between local and international people.. All in all you will be participating to a worthy cause and having a fantastic volunteer experience in one!.. The Volunteer Experience.. Arriving at Daktari.. Your volunteer experience starts from Saturday, which is the day of the week you must arrive and you can stay from one week to three months and even longer if you want.. We will arrange your collection from Hoedspruit airport or Hoedspruit town.. On arrival you will be shown your chalet and facilities and toured around the camp.. On Sunday we have a late breakfast and a general briefing to help you settle into your volunteer experience in South Africa.. Teaching the children.. Every Monday Daktari welcomes a new group of 8 local underprivileged children who stay at Daktari full board for 5 days.. As a volunteer one of your main tasks will be teaching the children our syllabus.. We have structured lessons and activities for each day of the week and we will provide you with a volunteer teaching handbook before you arrive so you can familiarize yourself with what to expect and these are available throughout your time at Daktari so you can prepare your lessons.. You will give the children the opportunity to discover, learn and become passionate about wildlife and conservation, their heritage.. You will also supplement their school curriculum by teaching classes in very basic English, maths, sciences, geography, life skills, educational games and social issues.. The children are in 8th grade, but they vary in age from 13 to 16 years old.. Their English is sometimes poor and most of the time they need a lot of support with maths.. Personal attention is something that they are not used to and this is why they really get the chance to blossom at the project.. They go home as different children and that has a lot to do with the attention they receive from people like you.. The best advice we can give is for you to really enjoy your volunteer experience and make it into a two-way learning opportunity.. We want you to leave with the feeling that you have left something positive for the future of the children, the animals and the environment, but also for yourself.. No specific skills are required.. We just need your passion and enthusiasm.. Caring for the animals.. Our orphaned wild animals provide the basis for inspiring care and compassion for the environment.. Daktari is home to several species of animals, reptiles and birds all with their own story to tell.. Sadly many will never be  ...   per day – breakfast, lunch and dinner.. Tea, coffee, juice and water.. Accommodation in one of our chalets.. Laundry and ironing daily.. Towels, bedding and mosquito net.. Pick up and drop off at Hoedspruit town or airport (when arriving/departing on a Sat only).. One trip into town per week.. Not included:.. International/national flights and travel arrangements.. Travel insurance.. Personal toiletries e.. g.. shampoo, sun cream, insect repellent.. Internet charges.. Soda and alcoholic drinks.. Discounts available as a Daktari volunteer:.. % off Ashton Tours shuttle service between Johannesburg – Hoedspruit.. % off at The Aero Lodge in Johannesburg.. Prices 2013:.. Below are our prices for 2013 that include all items mentioned above:.. 1 week: 430 GBP.. 2 weeks: 610 GBP.. 3 weeks: 870 GBP.. 4 weeks: 1090 GBP.. 6 weeks: 1530 GBP.. 8 weeks: 2080 GBP.. 12 weeks: 3070 GBP.. Payment:.. We request a deposit of 20% on booking and the balance one month before arrival.. Why volunteers pay.. Being a non-profit organisation, your fees are needed to help to cover our overall running costs.. Believe it or not the cost of life in the bush is higher than in the cities because we are far from everything.. When we welcome volunteers, we still have to cover the following expenses:.. Food for volunteers and the children.. Costs of accommodating volunteers and children.. Fuel for the generator.. Telephone and internet.. Animal food and care.. Salaries for our staff.. Paraffin for lights.. Gas for refrigeration.. Renovations, upgrading of facilities.. Educational equipment and material.. Practical education materials.. Fuel for transport of the children.. Veterinary fees.. Your fees as a volunteer help us to achieve education for the children and care for the animals.. • Title: Volunteer Reviews - Daktari Bush School and Wildlife Orphanage
Descriptive info: You are here:.. Volunteer Reviews (16).. Wednesday, 13 November 2013 08:09.. Cécile Le Gal.. Written by.. Amy Hulme.. Cécile Le Gal, Daktari Volunteer 05/10/2013 - 11/10/2013.. I volunteered just for one week in Daktari which is really too short, but in one week it seems to me that I learned a lot.. First I learned about animals and how some people are able to love animals like human beings, or maybe more.. I like animals, but never before did I think how someone can respect and love all animals so much.. It seems that animals give back this love to this kind of people.. After one week I was still a little afraid by some of them, but i’m sure that if I had stayed little longer I wouldn’t be anymore….. I also really enjoyed the contact with these very shy but very enthusiastic animals, volunteers and children coming there to learn more about their country and the environment, i’m sure it’s gonna help them for the future.. Last thing I really enjoyed is the team of Daktari, very available, always someone to help or to talk if you have any question or needs….. I think I learned a lot about animals, about people and most of all about me, which is always good.. My only regret: a too short stay! I will come back again, be sure ;-) !.. A big thanks for all the Daktari Bush School team, and see you,.. Cécile.. Published in.. Tagged under.. Read more.. Tuesday, 12 November 2013 12:19.. Camille Sautter.. Camille Sautter, Daktari Volunteer 20/07/2013 - 16/08/2013.. If you want to live an amazing, adventurous, exciting and moving experience you can find all of this in Daktari.. My month there was unforgettable; I learn't how to take care and love animals (and it was not that evident for me when I came), how to build an eagle cage or create a nice plant tub! But most of all, I met wonderful, open-minded and kind people; children, staff and volunteers.. I have so many great moments in mind that is difficult to choose one to tell you…But one of the best was seeing the kids getting really interested while we were giving lessons or having fun with the games (such as the pictionary game).. I promise, you would love it, at least as much as me.. Camille.. Tuesday, 12 November 2013 10:02.. Monica Filkova.. Monica Filkova, Daktari Volunteer 28/07/2012 - 11/08/2012.. Daktari was a great experience - from getting to know the animals to learning to cook pap and helping out in the eco-club at the school.. But while caring for ailing animals is good and coming up with enrichment ideas is fun, it was the educational aspect that attracted me and that left the most lasting impression.. I’ve done a number of volunteer placements focused on wildlife research, protection or rehabilitation, but this one was special because you could see a visible difference in the kids even after just a few days of getting attention with their maths and English, being engaged in conversations and being challenged to think through their role in the social and natural environment.. It’s not always easy and there are hiccups, but it’s such an amazing experience to see them get up on the rock by the pool to get their completion certificate - sometimes maybe the first time their efforts have been acknowledged formally.. It’s astonishing that they live an hour from Kruger Park but have never been and most don’t really appreciate the diversity of flora and fauna at their doorstep or why it is important to protect it.. It’s amazing what Michelle and Ian have accomplished and that Daktari keeps moving forward so there are now graduates of the eco-clubs and the one-week program that are moving forward in life along the path Daktari showed them.. It’s an inspiring blueprint for bringing together education, wildlife conservation and giving a helping hand to under-privileged children..  ...   that Daktari will have a special place in my heart forever.. Tuesday, 12 November 2013 09:38.. Maud Metayer.. Maud Metayer, Daktari Volunteer 2011.. I spent 3 weeks at Daktari during the year 2011 and I will always remember it! I had a great time there and I met wonderful persons from different countries all around the world.. During the morning we used to clean the cages of animals, give them food and take care of them.. Kids were coming with us.. After breakfast and dog walking it was time for class where we had a lot of interesting time with the kids.. we also had fun during swimming pool party or playing cards or others games.. it was wonderful when we walked in the bush and specialy during sunset.. I saw many different species of animals and my wish today would be to come back to daktari.. Thank you Michele, thank you Ian for your hospitality and your kindness,.. Monday, 28 October 2013 09:43.. Danielle Austin.. Danielle Austin, Daktari Volunteer 24/08/2013 - 08/09/2013.. My adventure started with a fundraiser.. I stumbled upon Daktari’s website by chance about a year ago.. I was doing research for a class assignment and somehow ended up reading about the organization for several hours.. I thought it would be an exciting opportunity, but didn’t have the time or money to travel.. However, I continued to visit the website every few months to read the newsletters.. I was going to make a donation on Christmas when I saw they were hosting a fundraising contest.. The grand prize was three free volunteer weeks and two nights in a luxurious game lodge.. It was like fate telling me to go to South Africa.. Or at least that’s what I told myself when I entered the fundraiser a few weeks later.. I ended up raising € 2, 462 and, even though I didn’t win, the owners Ian Michele Merrifield offered to let me come volunteer at Daktari for two weeks and arranged one week with Wildlife Vet Peter Rogers.. I didn’t really know what to expect when I arrived at Daktari seven months later.. I had been in contact with Michele all summer and read everything I could about Daktari and South Africa, but nothing I read or imagined even came close to the amazing people I met and experiences I had.. The moment I stepped off the plane in Hoedspruit I was greeted with a warm welcome.. The kindness continued to pour in, not only from the other volunteers and staff members but from the children as well.. I was initially drawn to Daktari because of my love for animals, but I left with a passion to teach.. Don’t get me wrong, the animals were amazing, but the children were incredible.. They always had smiles on their faces and were so eager to learn new things.. I’ll never forget reading a thank you letter I received from a group of students after my first week there.. It was absolutely amazing to see just how much this experience meant to them.. Ian and Michele have put their heart and soul into this program — and it shows.. I’ve never met two people who are more genuine and dedicated to making South Africa a better place.. Both the children and volunteers learn so much during their time there.. The opportunity to see and interact with such wonderful wild animals is icing on the cake.. I returned to the United States with a new outlook on life and will always be thankful for the time I was able to spend at Daktari.. I would do it all again in a heartbeat — even the 16-hour plane ride.. If you are looking for an organization to volunteer with or donate to, I couldn’t think of a place more deserving than Daktari.. Sincerely,.. More.. Lizzy Garland.. Barbro and Kjell Asplund.. Sinclair Smith.. Katrien Vermeulen.. Start.. Prev.. Next.. End.. Page 1 of 2..

Descriptive info: About Daktari Bush School Wildlife Orphanage.. Daktari wants to educate and inspire children to care for their environment through the medium of a wildlife orphanage.. Daktari was created by Michèle and Ian Merrifield, who registered it as a non-profit company in 2002.. The word "Daktari" is  ...   a wildlife orphanage which uses orphaned wild animals as an education medium.. Volunteers and staff supplement the school curriculum by giving a hands-on education, in existing school subjects, and at the same time provide an environmental experience.. The goals of the organisation include learning through working together and improving the quality of life of all participants, including the animals.. Our mottos are:.. "Care for life" and "Make a plan"..
