If you've had the chance to read John Piper's.. blog post.. from last week, you might recall that one of the things he mentions is this highly encouraging statistic: in the last 12-months we've seen a 40% increase in Website visits from outside the United States.. For those who might be interested, here is a country-by-country ranking, and how it compares to historical data.. Descriptive info: /.. Update on John Piper’s Transition.. March 27, 2012.. Subscribe to.. All Blog Posts.. Update 4/24:.. My Future at Desiring God.. Bethlehem Baptist is one step closer to commissioning John Piper from the local church pastorate to greater involvement with Bethlehem College and Seminary and to a wider ministry nationally and internationally through Desiring God.. The Bethlehem elders are.. announcing.. to the congregation their candidate for Associate Pastor for Preaching and Vision and, God willing, John Piper's eventual successor as the church's senior pastor.. Jason Meyer, 36-year-old Assistant Professor of New Testament for.. Bethlehem College and Seminary.. , is the elders' recommendation for congregational consideration and vote at a special May 20 all-church meeting.. Meyer is scheduled to preach three consecutive weekends — April 29, May 6, and May 13 — and answer questions in several venues before the May 20 decision.. With approval and confirmation, he would begin the position August 1 and overlap with Piper at Bethlehem for a yet-to-be-specified period of time.. Then there would be a "second vote" to affirm Meyer's transition to the role of senior pastor and commission Piper to the wider ministry.. This new development is one of the ongoing effects of Bethlehem's ".. Antioch Moment.. ," announced by Piper less than a year ago.. On April 9, 2011, Piper called the church to six weeks of focused prayer regarding his succession and the church's structure and long-term funding.. Meyer's candidacy is a major piece in addressing these difficult questions posed during this important season in the life of the church.. "Setting Apart" Piper for Wider Ministry.. One effect of such a transition is that the church is "setting apart" Piper (to use the language of Acts 13:2 and the "Antioch Moment") from the heavy demands of pastoring a large multi-site church for more engagement in wider ministry through writing and speaking.. Piper is anticipating that his involvement with Bethlehem College and Seminary and his broader ministry nationally and internationally will not decrease after the transition, but increase, perhaps considerably.. Piper writes to the congregation,.. There is an ever-increasing pull on my life to be involved in ministry outside Bethlehem.. Much of this feels strategic to me for the cause of Christ.. While I felt competent and energized to formulate plans for the structures of Bethlehem, this outside pull was secondary.. But I sense that this is changing.. It seems to me that the Lord is saying: "You have led Bethlehem to this point; it is time to hand off the internal leadership labors to another; I have a few other things yet for you to do.. ".. Writing has always been a calling.. But it has been secondary to preaching at Bethlehem and to internal leadership at this church.. As my years go by I realize that there are writing projects that I think God  ...   of teaching, writing, preaching, missions, and pastoral experience.. (B&H Academic, 2009) and is presently writing.. Preaching: A Biblical Theology.. (Crossway, 2013).. Prior to coming to Bethlehem, Meyer was the Dean of Chapel and Assistant Professor of New Testament and Greek at Louisiana College in Pineville, Louisiana, from 2006–2009.. He taught New Testament for the Spring 2010 semester in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, at the Evangelical Theological College.. Previously, he served as the pastor of Orville Baptist Church while completing a doctorate in New Testament at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky.. Originally from South Dakota, Meyer studied at Bethlehem from 1999–2001 with The Bethlehem Institute (TBI), now Bethlehem College and Seminary (BCS).. At BCS, Meyer has provided oversight in the area of New Testament and taught for the seminary in his areas of specialization: Paul's epistles and theology, the Law and the New Testament, preaching, biblical theology, and Greek language.. Jason and his wife, Cara, have two daughters (Gracie and Allie), and two sons adopted from Ethiopia (David and Jonathan).. Please join us at Desiring God and Bethlehem in praying for God's leading in this process, and for Jason Meyer and John Piper in particular at this crucial juncture in their ministries.. • Title: An Update from John Piper - Desiring God
Descriptive info: An Update from John Piper.. An Update from John Piper.. February 14, 2012.. Update 4/24:.. Increasingly, our vision for Desiring God is global.. The Internet is our main way of spreading a passion for the supremacy of God in all things for the joy of all peoples through Jesus Christ.. And the Internet is global.. We are continually amazed who is downloading articles and messages.. Jesus has global goals for his church.. He has all authority in heaven and on earth.. No inch of the planet is not his! And he promises that his gospel will reach all the people groups of the world as a testimony (Matthew 24:14).. And he commands that we teach everything he has commanded to all these groups (Matthew 28:20).. So we see our Internet presence as bearing that "testimony" and broadening that "teaching.. We are only one voice.. There are thousands of others.. We want to be faithful with what God has given us.. We love the truth he has shown us in the Scriptures.. And we love to say it in creative ways around the world.. But we are only one voice, and it will take a mighty chorus of voices to finish Jesus' mission.. We are glad to be a small part of this great company.. Seasons at Desiring God.. We've had a couple of distinct seasons in our ministry.. We began as a tape ministry with a catalog and a mailing list in 1994.. Call that DG 1.. 0.. In 12 years, we distributed roughly 500,000 tapes and CDs.. Small, but sweet, beginnings.. Along the way, we have always had conferences and a local bookstore.. But the central strategy for spreading has clearly become the Internet.. In 2006, we put all of our digital resources online for free.. This solidified the Internet as the main megaphone for our message.. Call that DG 2.. In recent months, we have clarified this Internet focus.. This clarification has resulted in a riveting of our resources on making the Web as globally effective as we can.. This includes the goal of translating our Web resources into the major trade languages of the world.. Call it DG 3.. World Internet Users.. A few statistics.. The population of the world just crossed the seven-billion mark.. There are currently an estimated 2.. 26 billion Internet users worldwide — one billion of which are from Asia, and only 273 million of which are from North America.. Here's the current breakdown  ...   have not yet begun to fight.. Transition from Selling.. We'll tell you more in the months to come.. But here's one implication of this clarified focus on the Web.. We've decided that this ship could sail faster and farther if we stopped carrying hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of book inventory.. For years, we have had a store as part of our Website.. I have always said to our guys: Let's have the lowest prices on the Web.. Beat Amazon's prices.. And we have — but only by pennies.. But we can't beat Amazon's service.. And we've simply decided that there's no need to.. Let's not compete; let's partner.. So the "store," as such, is going away.. Instead, we will have improved "product pages" — an online catalog of sorts — on each book and other products where you will have several of options: read descriptions, watch video introductions, download free PDFs, and click to order the product from Amazon, or other partnering retailers.. In other words, you lose no accessibility, you gain information and possibilities, and we off-load the inventory, so to speak, so the ship sails faster and farther.. We'll keep on doing the amazing bulk offers from time to time, but even those will be for suggested donations.. We are leaving the selling business.. Speaking of dumping the inventory, we are putting all of our books and resources on sale for $5 or less.. Think of this as a transition sale.. We'd be thrilled if you would take advantage of this and help us lighten the ship.. More to come in the next few months.. Exciting new technology will be coming online soon.. We are predominately donor-funded from folks who love what we stand for — even more so now with moving away from having a store.. If you're one of those lovers of the truth that God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him, it would make us really glad if you'd.. consider partnering with us.. in our mission to reach the world.. ________.. On April 9, I said that the elders would be praying every Thursday for six weeks seeking the Lord’s mind on three issues facing us at this moment in the 140-year life of our church: succession (when should a new pastor for preaching and vision take my place and I move over to teach and write and mentor), structure (one church on multiple c….. Happy Birthday, Pastor John!.. January 11, 2011.. Today is John Piper’s 65th birthday.. Join us in blessing a man for whom retirement from the kingdom work is not on the horizon!.. Pastor John, in honor of your birthday the DG staff has compiled 65 reasons why we are thankful to God for you.. (Many more were submitted!) And of course there are some similarities, but then again, some things simply bear repeating.. Heavenly Father, we really love Pastor John and are so grateful that you have made him a man who(se).. Really finds You, in all Your triune glory, to be his greatest treasure and points us to you.. Helps us see and savor Your Son, Jesus, more.. One kingdom-constant in this age is that those who are called to lead must at some point “entrust” what they’ve learned and built “to faithful men who will be able to teach others also” (2 Timothy 2:2).. And that’s happening today at Desiring God.. On behalf of the DG board and staff, it is my great joy to announce that effective today Scott Anderson is the new Executive Director of Desiring God.. Scott is a DG veteran, having joined us in May 2001.. He has served in a number of roles over the years, most recently as Director of Events Partnerships.. Some of you might recognize him as the emcee at our.. conferences.. and the host of our recent series of.. DG Live broadcasts.. It doesn’t take….. John Piper’s Report on His Leave of Absence.. January 1, 2011.. I wrote this report for Bethlehem and have adapted it for this first day of 2011 on the DG Blog.. It’s longer than a blog should be.. My only excuse is that I did cut 263 pages.. For eight months of this year (May–December), I was on a leave of absence.. That meant  ...   a.. leave of absence.. from Bethlehem from May 1 through December 31.. John will be returning to Bethlehem, as planned, the first week of January, but he and Noël will be in Georgia for New Year’s weekend (Jan 1-2) with her family.. His first weekend back, God willing, in the Bethlehem pulpit will be January 8 9.. Join us in praising God for his grace to the Pipers and to Bethlehem since May, and in praying with us for a strong finish to 2010, and a God-honoring start to 2011 as John is back with us.. Update from the Pipers.. September 12, 2010.. Noël and I continue to be deeply thankful to our family at Bethlehem for the gift of these months away.. You may recall my explanation for the leave where we said there were three components: soul, marriage and family, and vocational.. Each needed a reality check.. And of course they are interrelated.. On the.. soul.. front, we continue to probe the roots of our most characteristic sins with a view to confessing them and repenting and seeking God’s transforming power through prayer and Bible-saturated counsel.. Over the next couple weeks they will be teaming up with members from Bethlehem to minister to Hispanics and Native Americans in Minnesota.. The team came to Desiring God yesterday for a visit, and infused our routine with their energy and enthusiasm.. We are thankful to God for the partnership we have with these brothers and sisters.. Moreover, we are reminded that the gospel knows no cultural or national boundaries, and those who share in the gospel have brothers and sisters around the world.. And we’re feeling a mixture of sadness, deep gratitude, and excitement about what the Lord has in store.. Lukas joined the DG staff in 2004 as our Customer Service Manager (CSM).. He didn't remain in that position very long.. Not because he wasn't good at it, but because he was good at many other things too.. I discovered quickly that Lukas is not one to color inside the lines.. I have come to love that about him.. The fact that his job description didn't say anything about creating new resources mattered little.. He just started doing things.. With trembling gratefulness in my heart, I look at the remarkable cluster of visionary ministries growing like fruit on the tree of.. Bethlehem Baptist Church.. We are a kind of.. mission sending agency.. with 85 foreign missionary units (families or singles) who count Bethlehem as their main sending base.. Children Desiring God.. is transforming the way children are nurtured in over two thousand churches in the US ….. Why Desiring God Exists.. February 27, 2008.. Desiring God, like all fallen, finite human ministries and people, sees “in a mirror dimly” (1 Corinthians 13:12).. We do not claim to be perfect in what we know.. And we do not claim to know all that can be known.. Nor do we claim to see what we know more clearly than others may see it.. But we do say with Paul, “Since we have the same spirit of faith according to what has been written, ‘I believed, and so I spoke,’ we also believe, and so we also speak” (2 Corinthians 4:13).. Though we do not know everything there is to know, and though we do not know anything perfectly, yet we do know many things truly and confidently, because of God’s revelation and his Spirit.. the rest of t….. Now there’s a great reason to give thanks!.. Recipe for Thanks-giving.. What turns the 4th Thursday of November into Thanksgiving? Turkey? I know one family who doesn’t like turkey.. Their traditional Thanksgiving meal is Vietnamese carryout.. But whatever our food traditions, is that all there is? Not if we plan.. real.. thanks into the day.. If we want to give thanks, we need only two things.. Something we’re thankful for and somebody to thank.. Seems so obvious, but I think I need to say it because it’s amazing how many people can say, “I’m thankful for _____ ,” without admitting that God is there to hear their thanks.. And they’re certainly not giving him credit for whatever it is they’re enjoying.. Maybe we can get ready for Thanksgiving by giving someone el….. A Tribute to DG's Forerunners.. November 9, 2007.. Admittedly, there were only 40 people in the congregation.. So according to the request,.. here’s my shot.. Descriptive info: Forgiveness, Forbearance, and Fertilizer.. February 23, 2007.. What my husband said last Sunday at the end of a.. sermon on forgiveness and forebearance.. in marriage:.. Picture your marriage as a grassy field.. You enter it at the beginning full of hope and joy.. You look out into the future and you see beautiful flowers and trees and rolling hills.. And that beauty is what you see in each other.. Your relationship is the field and flowers and the rolling hills.. But before long, you begin to step in cow pies.. Some seasons of your marriage they may seem to be everywhere.. Late at night they are especially prevalent.. These  ...   team of 14 was sent by Bethlehem Baptist, with the help of Joni and Friends, to distribute 100 wheelchairs through one disabilities ministry in Yaounde and one in Bamenda.. There were 4 occupational or physical therapists, 4 handymen/mechanics, and the rest of us were support/go-fers.. From almost the beginning it was clear that we would fare better if we said the words, “If the Lord wills.. and.. if we really meant it.. We should have been saying, “If the Lord wills, we will arrive in Yaounde at 7:05 pm, Monday.. ” Instead, our plane had mechanical problems so our take-off and arrival were delayed.. Descriptive info: : Posts on Outside Events.. Piper at Passion Tonight.. Marshall Segal.. January 3, 2013.. Atlanta, Ga.. – From the opening note, Passion 2013 has been another brilliant illustration of how big our God is, and that he is capable of capturing a generation of young people who know, love, and live for Jesus.. Louie Giglio and the Passion team continue to grow and refine a movement that engages students with a big vision of God, and then aims to set their lives on a trajectory of mission, sacrifice, and service for the advance of the gospel.. It’s impossible to adequately describe the experience of standing together in one room with 60,000 college students worshipping through strong, God-centered music, and then sitting with them to receive God's word and his commission to make him ….. Pray for Passion 2013.. January 1, 2013.. The Georgia Dome in downtown Atlanta was rocking for last night’s major college bowl game that came down to the last snap, but anticipations are that it will be even louder the next three nights — with praise for Jesus.. Well over 50,000 college students ascend on the Dome today as Passion 2013 begins this evening and goes through Friday morning.. While Clemson’s game-winning field goal, with no time left on the clock, signaled the night’s end for players and fans, it was just the beginning for a small army of staff and volunteers who traded sleep to turn a football stadium into a massive worship gathering for a large army to celebrate the beauty and grace and supremacy of Jesus.. The first….. The Lineup Card for T4G.. April 10, 2012.. With this week’s Together for the Gospel conference (T4G) gathering at the basketball arena in Louisville, it seemed like hoops was the right direction to take the promo.. But, come on, it’s Opening Week in Major League Baseball, and there are.. nine.. speakers giving.. plenary addresses.. Nine.. Nine innings.. Nine men on the field.. The list of nine speakers is almost a lineup card, is it not?.. Which got some of us at the DG offices thinking.. , Forget the conference, if this were a baseball lineup card, would it make sense to bat the players in this order? And what positions would they play in the field?.. So, first, here’s the order for this week, and second, some of our commentary on the line….. The Power of the Gospel and Marriage.. October 29, 2011.. Together for the Underestimated Gospel.. , April 10-12, 2012, in Louisville, KY.. Changing a Church Culture.. November 3, 2010.. In the sixth and final session of the.. Trellis and Vine workshop.. , Col Marshall presented 13 ideas for changing a complicated and programmatic church culture into a culture of disciple-making:..  ...   and pointed to how Paul himself was a trainer of ministers—a discipler of disciplemakers.. Three key points Col highlighted from the text came under the headings 1) word, 2) prayer, and 3) parenting.. First, Paul’s ministry was.. word.. -centered—shaped and powered by the gospel and the Scriptures.. Col challenged us to “be plain speakers of the gospel, and let God do the work.. ”.. Which means, secondly, dependence on God and his Spirit—characterized by.. prayer.. In explaining our need for God’s help, Col commented, “Our sin keeps….. Small Groups: Positively Dangerous?.. For session three yesterday of the.. (the second half of which is today), the pastors split into three groups to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of their current ministry.. I sat in on one group and listened to the discussion.. As one pastor would stand, introduce himself, and report from the frontlines, all of the pastors responded with resonating nods.. Although these pastors are speaking as workers in different contexts, their shared vocation creates a warm camaraderie.. As the three groups of pastors came back together, Col picked up the teaching by introducing some trellises for disciple making.. On the foundation of Sunday gatherings and the public ministry o….. Key Questions for Growing the Vine.. November 2, 2010.. Col began the second session of today’s workshop with a story of a young cricket player who embraced the gospel after two years of intentional ministry of the Word.. In summary, Col said that the careful, personal proclamation of the gospel, alongside the public, is being used by God to call people to himself.. Why Do We Do Small Groups?.. The session then moved into the subject of small group ministry within the local church.. The pace of the sessions are helpful, weaving the teaching by Col and Tony with focused discussion by the pastors gathered.. The first question posed to elicit discussion was simply, “Why do we have small groups?”.. The 100 pastors huddled into groups of two or three an….. The Biblical Vision of Christian Ministry.. We found out at the beginning of this morning's session that there are attendees here from not only the 5-state region (Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and the Dakotas) but also as far as New Hampshire, south Texas, and Oregon.. Tony Payne led us through the first session on the biblical vision of Christian ministry.. God's Agenda for the World: The Gospel.. Payne began by asking, "What is God's agenda in the world?"
