Perhaps your greatest spiritual need right now is precisely this — to let the flood of God’s prodigal grace wash over you afresh and like never before.. As much as your instincts may be saying that next step is yours, what decision you make, what change you can effect, it may be that what you need most is to stand back, look outside yourself, and see the salvation of the Lord which he has worked for you (Exodus 14:13) — by sheer grace.. Such is John Piper’s hope in his new book.. Five Points: Towards a Deeper Experience of God’s Grace.. It’s a short one, less than 100 pages, but the substance is rich and full.. The vision of God’s grace here is costly, thick, and bottomless.. Decades Distilled.. Piper has taught on these strange and wonderful truths for decades, and now distilled his best ways of unfolding these “doctrines of grace” in.. He writes,.. My experience is that clear knowledge of God from the Bible is the kindling that sustains the fires of affection for God.. And probably the most crucial kind of knowledge is the knowledge of what God is like in salvation.. That is what the five points of Calvinism are about.. Not the power and  ...   of God’s grace.. • Title: New Course on Calvinism from John Piper - Desiring God
Descriptive info: New Course on Calvinism from John Piper.. Jonathan Parnell.. July 8, 2013.. The Bible gives us a glorious vision of God’s sovereignty in saving sinners.. “Calvinism” is a kind of nickname for this Christian body of doctrine on salvation that so appropriately humbles humanity and so magnificently exalts divine grace.. In a new eight-hour course on Calvinism, or “the doctrines of grace,” John Piper walks through the historical “five points,” digging into text after text of Scripture and responding to many of the most common questions.. “The doctrines of grace,” Piper explains, “give the lowest view of the saved person as utterly depraved and hopeless in himself, and the highest view of the saved person as individually chosen and loved and purchased at infinite cost.. ”.. These truths expose our desperate neediness, such that the subtlest form of boasting in ourselves becomes ridiculous.. And at the same time, they highlight the grace of God such that we marvel with the apostle Paul, “To him be glory forever” (Romans 11:36).. Stream or download the entire seminar in six parts:.. TULIP (Part 1) — Introduction: Why Is Calvinism Relevant?.. This class is devoted to building foundations under Romans 8:28 so we can survive.. If you think  ...   invisible aspects of our nature.. And I am arguing that when we get there, it’s really bad.. I don’t think most Americans feel nearly bad enough about how bad we are.. TULIP (Part 4) — Total Depravity continued; Unconditional Election.. The reason we come to Jesus is because we belong to God… The call of God provides the decisive cause of faith.. TULIP (Part 5) — Unconditional Election continued; Limited Atonement.. How do we know if we are the elect? Are you calling God “Father?” Do you call Jesus your Lord? You pursue the knowledge of your election indirectly.. You pursue it by submitting to the lordship of Jesus and you pursue it by embracing God as your Father through Jesus Christ and his atoning work.. TULIP (Part 6) — Limited Atonement continued; Perseverance of the Saints.. I love the doctrine of the perseverance of the saints.. The older I get the more I love it.. In a sense you should love it when you are young because it is the reason you can believe you’ll be a Christian in 60 years.. But once you have lived those 60 years you look back and say, “Amazing.. He is amazing.. The Doctrines of Grace / Calvinism..

  • Title: Rebuilding Some Basics of Bethlehem: The Doctrines of Grace Otherwise Known as the 5 Points of Calvinism or TULIP - Desiring God
Descriptive info: Taste & See Articles.. Rebuilding Some Basics of Bethlehem: The Doctrines of Grace.. Otherwise Known as the 5 Points of Calvinism or TULIP.. September 25, 2009.. Text Only Feed.. Sermon Audio.. Sermon Video.. Sermon Text.. We believe that these 5 truths are biblical and therefore true.. We believe that they magnify God s precious grace and give unspeakable joy to sinners who have despaired of saving themselves.. Total Depravity.. Our sinful corruption is so deep and so strong as to make us slaves of sin and morally unable to overcome our own rebellion and blindness.. This inability to save ourselves from ourselves is.. total.. We are utterly dependent on God s grace to overcome our rebellion, give us eyes to see, and effectively draw us to the Savior.. We were dead in our trespasses.. (Ephesians 2:5).. The mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God s law; indeed, it.. cannot.. Those who are in the flesh.. please God.. (Romans 8:7 8).. The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and.. he is not able.. to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.. (1 Corinthians 2:14).. Unconditional Election.. God s election is an unconditional act of free grace that was given through his Son Jesus before the world began.. By this act, God chose, before the foundation of the world, those who would be delivered from bondage to sin and brought to repentance and saving faith in Jesus.. He chose us in him before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4).. As many as were appointed to eternal life believed.. (Acts 13:48).. I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.. So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy.. (Romans 9:15 16).. God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise.. (1 Corinthians 1:27).. Israel failed to obtain what it was seeking.. The elect obtained it, but the rest were hardened.. (Romans 11:7; cf.. 9:11 12; John 6:37).. My servant whom I have chosen, that you may know and believe me.. (Isaiah 43:10).. Irresistible Grace.. This means that the resistance that all human beings exert against God every day (Romans 3:10 12; Acts 7:51) is wonderfully overcome at the proper time by God s saving grace for undeserving rebels whom he chooses freely to save.. Even when we were dead in our trespasses, [God] made us alive together with Christ by  ...   not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours.. And for their sake I consecrate myself [that is, prepare to die], that they also may be sanctified in truth.. (John 17:9, 19).. He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? (Romans 8:32).. Perseverance of the Saints.. We believe that all who are justified will win the fight of faith.. They will persevere in faith and never surrender to the enemy of their souls.. This perseverance is the promise of the new covenant, obtained by the blood of Christ, and worked in us by God himself, yet not so as to diminish, but only to empower and encourage, our vigilance; so that we may say in the end,.. I have fought the good fight, but it was not I, but the grace of God which was with me.. Those whom he justified he also glorified.. (Romans 8:30).. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.. (John 10:27 28).. I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.. (Philippians 1:6).. I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own.. (Philippians 3:12).. Resting in Christ and reaching for the goal,.. Pastor John.. 2013 Desiring God Foundation.. • Title: Ten Effects of Believing in the Five Points of Calvinism - Desiring God
Descriptive info: Ten Effects of Believing in the Five Points of Calvinism.. April 20, 2002.. These ten points are my personal testimony to the effects of believing in the five points of Calvinism.. I have just completed teaching a seminar on this topic and was asked by the class members to post these reflections so they could have access to them.. I am happy to do so.. They, of course, assume the content of the course, which is.. available online.. from Desiring God Ministries, but I will write them here in the hope that they might stir others to search, Berean-like, to see if the Bible teaches what I call Calvinism.. 1.. These truths make me stand in awe of God and lead me into the depth of true God-centered worship.. I recall the time I first saw, while teaching Ephesians at Bethel College in the late 70 s, the threefold statement of the goal of all God s work, namely, to the praise of the glory of his grace (Ephesians 1:6, 12, 14).. It has led me to see that we cannot enrich God and that therefore his glory shines most brightly not when we try to meet his needs but when we are satisfied in him as the essence of our deeds.. From him and through him and to him are all things.. To him the glory forever (Romans 11:36).. Worship becomes an end in itself.. It has made me feel how low and inadequate are my affections, so that the Psalms of longing come alive and make worship intense.. 2.. These truths help protect me from trifling with divine things.. One of the curses of our culture is banality, cuteness, cleverness.. Television is the main sustainer of our addiction to superficiality and triviality.. God is swept into this.. Hence the trifling with divine things.. Earnestness is not excessive in our day.. It might have been once.. And, yes, there are imbalances in certain people today who don t seem to be able to relax and talk about the weather.. Robertson Nicole said of Spurgeon, Evangelism of the humorous type [we might say, church growth of the marketing type] may attract multitudes, but it lays the soul in ashes and destroys the very germs of religion.. Mr.. Spurgeon is often thought by those who do not know his sermons to have been a humorous preacher.. As a matter of fact there was no preacher whose tone was more uniformly earnest, reverent and solemn (Quoted in The Supremacy of God in Preaching, p.. 57).. 3.. These truths make me marvel at my own salvation.. After laying out the great, God-wrought salvation in Ephesians 1, Paul prays, in the last part of that chapter, that the effect of that theology will be the enlightenment of our hearts so that we marvel at our hope, and at the riches of the glory of our inheritance, and at the power of God at work in us that is, the power to raise the dead.. Every ground of boasting is removed.. Brokenhearted joy and gratitude abound.. The piety of Jonathan Edwards begins to grow.. When God has given us a taste of his own majesty and our own wickedness, then the Christian life becomes a thing very different than conventional piety.. Edwards describes it beautifully when he says,.. The desires of the saints, however earnest, are humble desires: their hope is a humble hope, and their joy, even when it is unspeakable, and full of glory, is humble, brokenhearted joy, and leaves the Christian more poor in spirit, and more like a little child, and more disposed to a universal lowliness of behavior (Religious Affections, New Haven: Yale University Press, 1959, pp.. 339f).. 4.. These truths make me alert to man-centered substitutes that pose as good news.. In my book, The Pleasures of God (2000), pp.. 144-145, I show that in the 18th century in New England the slide from the sovereignty of God led to Arminianism and thence to universalism and thence to Unitarianism.. The same thing happened in England in the 19thcentury after Spurgeon.. Iain Murray s Jonathan Edwards: A New Biography (Edinburgh: Banner of Truth,  ...   might be the firstborn among many brothers.. 30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.. 31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? 33 Who shall bring any charge against God s elect? It is God who justifies.. 34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died- more than that, who was raised- who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written, For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.. 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.. 7.. These truths make me see everything in the light of God s sovereign purposes that from him and through him and to him are all things, to him be glory forever and ever.. All of life relates to God.. There s no compartment where he is not all-important and the one who gives meaning to everything.. 1 Corinthians 10:31.. Seeing God s sovereign purpose worked out in Scripture, and hearing Paul say that he accomplishes all things according to the counsel of his will (Ephesians 1:11) makes me see the world this way.. 8.. These truths make me hopeful that God has the will, the right, and the power to answer prayer that people be changed.. The warrant for prayer is that God may break in and change things including the human heart.. He can turn the will around.. Hallowed be thy name means: cause people to hallow your name.. May your word run and be glorified means: cause hearts to be opened to the gospel.. We should take the New Covenant promises and plead with God to bring them to pass in our children and in our neighbors and among all the mission fields of the world.. God, take out of their flesh the heart of stone and give him a new heart of flesh (Ezekiel 11:19).. Lord, circumcise their hearts so that they love you (Deuteronomy 30:6).. Father, put your spirit within them and cause them to walk in Your statutes (Ezekiel 36:27).. Lord, grant them repentance and the knowledge of the truth that they may escape from the snare of the devil (2 Timothy 2:25-26).. Father, open their hearts so that they believe the gospel (Acts 16:14).. 9.. These truths reminds me that evangelism is absolutely essential for people to come to Christ and be saved, and that there is great hope for success in leading people to faith, but that conversion is not finally dependent on me or limited by the hardness of the unbeliever.. So it gives hope to evangelism, especially in the hard places and among the hard peoples.. John 10:16, I have other sheep that are not of this fold, I must bring them also.. They will heed my voice.. It is God s work.. Throw yourself into it with abandon.. 10.. These truths make me sure that God will triumph in the end.. Isaiah 46:9-10, I am God and there is no other.. I am God and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand that I will accomplish all my purpose.. Putting them altogether: God gets the glory and we get the joy.. Chinese-Simplified.. By Title.. By Language..

  • Title: Missions Is Not for Wimpy Women — And Nine Other Lessons from Ethiopia - Desiring God
Descriptive info: Our conclusion: Bible-tethered, expository exultation, Christian Hedonism, and Big-God theology resonates across oceans, cultures, languages, and denominations.. It bears fruit in every soil.. What an amazing thing to do tag-team exposition in Ethiopia with my pastoral successor!.. Ten Glimpses of God’s Global Mission.. So here are some standout glimpses of missions as I saw it.. I was ashamed of President Obama’s policies on so-called gay marriage and abortion.. I apologized to one Ethiopian pastor who is often consulted by the national leaders of Ethiopia.. He said how difficult it is to persuade his leaders to stand for truth and righteousness when America threatens to tie international aid to the endorsement of these sins.. He stood before his church of several thousand after I preached and called them to prayer about this crisis.. I told him I thought these policies were wicked.. He knelt down beside me and asked me to pray for him.. In her emergency medical training here, one of the missionaries from our church in Minneapolis was invited to cut herself and then sew it up so she could actually be sure she knew how to do stitches.. She did it.. But not to worry, she practiced on cow tongue first.. Missions is not for wimpy women.. I stood behind a plastic surgeon from Minneapolis and watched him give a new life to an eighteen-month-old boy with a cleft lip who in his poverty would have been an utter outcast.. For 45 minutes, he carved and sewed with the skill of a medical artist.. The before and after was a stunning picture of rebirth.. I heard an illustration of the wisdom of God’s providence in sending missionaries from everywhere to everywhere — not just from the West to the developing world.. An Ethiopian Christian missionary was sent to Muslim-dominated Pakistan.. When the mayor of the city in Pakistan heard that he was there, he told him that he may do anything he wants in this city.. Why? Because 1,400 years ago, Ethiopia gave asylum to the fleeing Mohammed, and we owe Ethiopia this favor.. I asked, Did he know he was a Christian missionary? Yes, was the answer, and this is the kind of thing God is doing all over the world.. One of our missionaries spoke of the remoteness of her life far from any city: The “toilet” is outside and during the rainy season not only is there the downpour to be endured at night, but snakes and hyenas.. Not exactly your average American walk from bedroom to bathroom on dry carpet.. One medical missionary corrected a common missionary counsel.. He said that we are often told, if you are not an evangelist in America, getting on a plane won’t make  ...   and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.. (Mark 8:35–38).. Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.. (Matthew 10:37).. Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.. (Matthew 5:11–12).. On our last day, we drove two hours outside of Addis to a magnificent, lush valley, and hiked along the cliffs until we came to what is known as the Portuguese Bridge.. This remote, triple-arch bridge was built 400 years ago by the Portuguese out of limestone and ostrich eggs.. It is still in use for the farmers with their donkeys, even though in the rainy season the water beneath has rushed against its foundations with four centuries of force.. The marvel of this construction, and the beauty of the far-stretching valley, portrayed the craft of God’s image-bearers and the wonder of his own handiwork.. I heard the plea again, and I give it here, that young people seriously seek a deep and unshakeable God-given call to giving their lives to an unreached people group.. Short-term missions has value.. But trying to accomplish long-term goals with short-term commitments is difficult.. Most of the peoples left to reach are hard to reach.. What is needed is the commitment of a life, not just a year.. A language to learn, a culture to know, a people to love, a gospel to speak, a church to plant, leaders to train — this is the pouring out of a life.. May God give many of you this high and holy and hard calling.. Nevertheless, if you have any life left, dream like you never have.. For example, I met a missionary who was a math major in college, spent part of his life in the military, most of it as an aviation engineer, then got a seminary degree, moved to Ethiopia to teach theology, and now, at age 67, is beginning a PhD program in church history while he teaches.. Does this inspire any 60-somethings out there?.. Recent posts from John Piper:.. Why It Took Me 34 Years to Get ‘Peoples’.. Hijacking Back Your Brain from Porn.. Missions.. John Piper (.. @JohnPiper.. ) is founder and teacher of desiringGod.. org and chancellor of Bethlehem College & Seminary.. For 33 years, he served as pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church, Minneapolis, Minnesota.. He is author of more than 50 books..

  • Title: Why It Took Me 34 Years to Get ‘Peoples’ - Desiring God
Descriptive info: Why It Took Me 34 Years to Get ‘Peoples’.. November 5, 2013.. God created the world so that he would receive glad-hearted worship from the entire panorama of peoples that he himself brought into being for this purpose.. Therefore, for the glory of God, and for the gladness of the peoples, we should join him in the aggressive missionary enterprise of reaching all the peoples of the world.. Summoning the Peoples.. That is what the.. this December is about.. Over 3,000 students are registered so far.. I am praying for twice that.. It is only one small part of God’s movement in the world today to reach the nations.. But it is an important part.. I am thrilled to be a part of it.. I hope the students of your church will come.. If it’s true that God created the world so that he would receive glad-hearted worship from all the peoples of the world, then missions is the summoning of the peoples to be glad in God.. This is a happy enterprise.. Yes, it is strewn with suffering and deep disappointments when many say no to the invitation.. But what a privilege to announce to the nations the best news in the world.. What an honor to summon them to joy: “Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you! Let the nations be glad and sing for joy” (Psalm 67:3–4).. What a calling to say,.. Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.. Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food.. Incline your ear, and come  ...   speak of peoples — reached and unreached.. One of the reasons for those decades of ignorance was the King James Bible.. I grew up reading the King James Bible.. But in the King James Bible there are only two occurrences of the plural word “peoples,” and both of them are in Revelation (Revelation 10:11, “And I was told, ‘You must again prophesy about many.. peoples.. and nations and languages and kings;’” and Revelation 17:15, “The waters.. are.. and multitudes and nations and languages”).. So we know the translators knew this plural usage.. But not once in the Old Testament does the word “peoples” occur.. But the ESV has 235 instances of the plural peoples.. In virtually all those cases the King James translates either as.. people.. (singular) or as.. gentiles.. God Is at Work.. So it would be possible to grow up with the King James Bible and never realize that the Hebrew and Greek terms for people are both singular and plural (Hebrew:.. am.. and.. amim.. ; Greek:.. laos.. laoi.. ), and never once see the term.. in the Bible, if you didn’t read Revelation very carefully.. So I would like to spare you my ignorance.. The Bible is filled with references to the peoples of the earth.. God means to have them for himself.. Christ died to have them: “You were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation” (Revelation 5:9).. God is at work mightily among the peoples.. He is pursuing them.. Americans are not the only ones, or the main ones in this pursuit.. But while we have breath we will do our part.. Pray for Cross.. A Whole World Hangs on a Word..

  • Title: Hijacking Back Your Brain from Porn - Desiring God
Descriptive info: October 15, 2013.. Last week I wrote about.. the physiological dimension of addiction to pornography.. New brain research suggests it is as strong as addiction to cocaine and heroin because of its unique combination of stimulant and opiate.. Pornography lays down real physiological paths in the brain.. All sexual experience tends to migrate to these paths.. I concluded that none of this brain research takes God by surprise.. He designed the interplay between the brain and the soul.. Discoveries of the connections between physical and spiritual reality do not nullify either.. Don’t Be Part of Abolishing Man.. So don’t let this new brain research make you think of yourself as mere flesh and chemicals.. This is the great myth of the modern world — what C.. S.. Lewis called the abolition of man.. This is the theory that human thought is nothing but movement in the brain.. It is a theory developed to destroy itself.. Lewis saw the tentacles of materialism reaching into every sphere:.. There will always be evidence, and every month fresh evidence, to show that religion is only psychological, justice only self-protection, politics only economics, love only lust, and thought itself only cerebral biochemistry.. (“Transposition,” in.. The Weight of Glory.. , 114–115).. But Lewis saw that nobody really acts as though they believe this.. They are playing a language game.. He illustrates this with the relationship between thought and brains:.. We are certain that, in this life at any rate, thought is intimately connected with the brain.. The theory that thought therefore is merely a movement in the brain is, in my opinion, nonsense; for if so, that theory itself would be merely a movement, an event among atoms, which may have speed and direction but of which it would be meaningless to use the words “true” or ”false.. ” (“Transposition,” 103).. Lewis is not playing counter-games here.. He is blood-earnest that the abolishers of man are refusing to see that they claim to make meaningful statements while destroying meaning.. Take the Mind-Body Connection by the Horns.. Meaning is rooted in supra-material truth.. You are not mere matter and energy.. You are an embodied soul who will live forever in heaven or in hell, created in the image of God, unlike mere animals, and, as a Christian, bought with the blood of the Son of God, and indwelt by the very Spirit of God himself.. These are stupendous realities — greater realities than endorphins and dopamine.. God wove together physical nerves and supra-physical spiritual affections — desire, fear, joy, anger, pity, admiration, trust, cherishing, love.. Instead of letting this connection discourage you, take it by the horns and make it serve your holiness.. This is what the Bible calls you to do.. Don’t think the Bible is silent on this all-important question of mind and body — thinking and brains, affections and chemicals.. God made these connections between physical and supra-physical, and God has wisdom for living in them.. Consider these four hope-filled observations.. Deep Renewal, Including Your Brain.. Brain research is an infant science, publishing its first baby steps.. They have scarcely begun to even name the mysteries of how truth and beauty is mediated through language, and then enters the mind as thought, and then is transposed into corresponding chemical processes.. Therefore, we should take hold of this amazing connection and claim what the Bible claims: Beholding the glory of the Lord, we are being changed (2 Corinthians 3:18).. Of course seeing nudes changes the brain.. But why should we think that seeing the glory of Christ exerts a weaker change? If brain paths pervert our affections and our behavior, do not make the wild mistake of assuming sanctification can only make weaker paths.. Paul calls you to “be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new man, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness” (Ephesians 4:23–24).. Watch out, lest you assume that the renewal of “the spirit of the mind” leaves no trace in the paths of the brain.. It does.. Paul says, “Put on the new man, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator” (Colossians 3:10).. If the seeing of internet nakedness creates  ...   would you be the slave of lust? Or would not fear utterly triumph over those chemicals?.. Beware of thinking you are a victim of the euphoric effect of dopamine and endorphins.. You are not.. God has ways of revealing his bloody Christ, and staggering you with odors and bears to rescue you for himself.. He will stoop to this for love’s sake.. Satan, Sex, and Chemicals.. Supra-chemical emotions — spiritual affections — are transposed into corresponding physical responses in the brain.. That means you.. can.. fight physical fire with spiritual fire.. And it works the other way as well.. God ordains that we fight for spiritual fruit by wielding physiological weapons with spiritual hands.. Have you ever considered the stunning implications of Paul’s Satan-defeating sexual counsel in 1 Corinthians 7:5? Be careful, single people.. You are likely to jump to the conclusion that this is either irrelevant for you, or bad news.. It’s not.. Paul says to husbands and wives,.. Do not deprive one another [of sexual relations], except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.. This implies that Paul intends for Christian couples to fight against the supernatural power of Satan by having sufficiently frequent sexual relations.. To put the point physiologically: There are brain chemicals that increase desire for sex as the length of abstinence increases.. The power of those chemicals decreases after orgasm.. Therefore, Paul says, make use of that physiological reality in marriage to reduce your vulnerability to Satan’s temptation to adultery and pornography.. Of course, this is not the only or the main weapon in our arsenal.. But it is one.. And it illustrates the validity of using physiological weapons against physiological foes.. Single people may rightly say,.. I don’t have that particular marriage weapon in my arsenal.. That’s right.. And I admire you for saying it.. But embrace the principle as it applies to you.. There are physiological realities that you know affect your vulnerability to temptation.. Use them to make war.. The Holy Spirit, Sleep, and Self-Control.. But is that spiritual? Isn’t self-control a “fruit of the Holy Spirit,” rather than a fruit of frequent sexual relations?.. It.. is.. a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:23), but not “rather than” a fruit of other forces.. The Spirit’s way of producing his fruit often includes very natural means.. For example, another fruit of the Spirit is patience (Galatians 5:22).. But who of us would deny that our patience rises and falls with how much sleep we get? Love, Paul says, is “patient.. and not easily irritated” (1 Corinthians 13:4–5).. But we are more easily irritated, and less patient, when we have not gotten the rest we need.. What I infer from this is that one of the many weapons in the arsenal of the Holy Spirit is sleep.. He humbles us to realize we are not God and that we need to be as helpless as a baby seven or eight hours a day, in order to be the loving, patient people he calls us to be.. Similarly with sexual self-control.. The Holy Spirit teaches us from Scripture, and from experience, and from each other, how our bodies work.. He means for us to lean on his power as we use the physiological counter-weapons he gives us.. Finding True Ecstasy.. Brain research is right: Our brains are deeply shaped by what we see.. And the more we see, the more well-beaten and controlling those paths become.. But we are not their victims.. These physiological powers are not ultimate.. God is ultimate.. And he has given us spiritual weapons just as physiologically powerful as pornography.. He too means to be seen — often and deeply (2 Corinthians 3:18; 4:4).. Moreover the spiritual powers of his word and Spirit have the right to conscript physiological forces into their service.. And in the end, God can hijack back the very paths of pornography and transpose the scintillations of those very paths into the ecstasies of knowing Christ.. Pornography: The New Narcotic.. How to Be Interesting and Unhelpful.. Does “Mere Christianity” Mean Eliminate Denominations?.. Pursuit of Holiness..

Not vanity, but being true to what Christian preaching is.. Before it is heralding a message, preaching means first and foremost stewarding a message.. Before we “preach the word” (2 Timothy 4:2), we should be devoted and unashamed students, “rightly handling the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15).. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price.. Does God (Really) Desire All to Be Saved?.. On the extent of who will be saved, the Bible makes two clear points:.. God desires that.. all.. sinners be saved (1 Timothy 2:4; 2 Peter 3:9; Ezekiel 18:23; Matthew 23:37).. God chose.. some.. people from eternity past (the elect), to be saved unconditionally, and only those elect will genuinely respond to the gospel and be saved (Matthew 22:14; John 6:37, 44, 65; 8:47; 10:26–29; Romans 8:29–30; 9:6–23; 11:5–10; 1 Corinthians 1:26–30; Ephesians 1:4–5; 1 Thessalonians 1:4; 2 Thessalonians 2:13; James 2:5)..
