The Prague underground plays an irreplaceable role in the concept of municipal public transport, in particular with respect to the everyday load of all surface transport routes.. Moreover, Prague - as a historical city - bears the heritage of confined development, a number of relatively small areas and protected historical monuments so that the reliable operation of the underground is absolutely critical for the life of the metropolis.. The progressive modernization of older underground stations and new construction has also brought new views on the operation of lighting systems.. The concept of luminaires with DALI gears was selected after overcoming initial problems with the search for an optimum technical solution.. The method of operation of a lighting system in the underground has partially different requirements when compared with other constructions.. Reliability together with achieving the necessary intensity of lighting in accordance with applicable standards is the first requirement.. Next is economy of operation, easy and comprehensible control and the possibility of status monitoring.. Platform lighting represents a specific issue, as described below.. An emergency lighting system that is always powered from a station central battery, together with other important underground technologies remains a special part.. The complete control and monitoring system of a lighting system is subsequently based on DALI communication into which, in addition, relevant technological elements are incorporated.. The aim of the solution was to fulfil the main requirements of Metro Praha as listed below:.. Safe operation of luminaires.. Ensuring the required lighting-technical parameters under all operational statuses.. Possibility of both local and remote control.. Automatic tests of emergency luminaires.. Economical operation, automatic dimming in link to daylight, timing modes, constant level of illuminance.. Monitoring of the lighting system as a unit, visualization both in the underground station and on the central control panel.. Obtaining background information for the purposes of repair and maintenance planning and reduction of operational costs.. Use of already verified control system technical platform.. Facts:.. 13 Prague underground stations fitted with luminaires with DALI gears, others in construction.. A total of 6,000 intelligent luminaires installed so far.. Automatic dimming in link to daylight, timing modes.. Remote and local control of luminaires and switching components in switchboards from the central control room.. Data transfer from individual luminaires (status, defects, burning hours) in the central control room.. Automatic modification of the operational mode of luminaires according to current outside temperature.. Luxmate Professional control application is operated on the PLC GE Series 90-30 platform to ensure maximum operational reliability.. Special application for automatic tests and emergency lighting status assessment.. Cimplicity central visualization displaying lighting and switchboard technology in stations.. Special application for transfer of values of daylight omni-directional sensors between stations.. Access to the control application of any station from any connecting point within underground technological network.. Cimplicity visualization for maintenance personnel in the stations of supervisors of individual lines.. Local visualization in stations on Pro-face touch panels or panel PCs.. Background:.. The Prague underground consists of 54 stations while 3 others are currently under construction.. The first stations were opened in 1974 and St #345;ížkov, Prosek, Let #328;any are the latest stations to be commissioned in 2009.. Until 1997 when the company Zumtobel installed the first lighting control system (still without DALI at that time) here, lighting control in the stations had been fitted with a system of local light sensors only.. Lighting system:.. Luminaires in each station can be classified on the basis of more criteria; for our purposes we will use classification between luminaires designated for public and non-public areas.. All luminaires in public areas are controlled with the DALI protocol; this applies to the emergency luminaires only in non-public areas.. Naturally, operation of the underground lighting system is subject  ...   to which larger or smaller groups of luminaires are connected are always switched by means of switches.. All DALI gears are set so that lighting up of luminaires to 100% intensity takes place in the case of a loss of DALI or LM-BUS control signal.. Luminaires return to the previous operational status after the defect has been remedied.. Control system:.. The system is based on the already well-proven Luxmate Professional control system with a specially modified software component for operation on the PLC GE Series 90-30 platform.. This variant was developed by Zumtobel exclusively for the Prague underground in order to achieve maximum reliability, also on the HW side.. LM-DALIS convertor units are positioned in individual light switchboards and connected to the spinal LM BUS bus bar.. Connection of the Luxmate BUS bus bar with PLC GE is carried out with Westermo opto-converters that allow extension of metallic interconnections without the risk of communication interference.. Ethernet connections for PLC integration with other parts of the technology are designed using a similar method.. Visualization of the complete technology runs on HMI Cimplicity while details from all underground stations fitted with the lighting control system are available in the system operator s workplace.. Visualization of local technology only runs on a panel-touch PC in the respective station.. The visualization displays the status of the monitored devices of switchboards and details of individual luminaires and it allows commands to be given remotely for both the technological part of the switchboards and for the lighting control system.. The locations of all important components such as contactors, controllers, switches, circuit breakers and protectors are monitored in all light switchboards.. This data is designated as technological points and is used for the correct assessment of luminaire status.. This close linking of the switchboard technology with the lighting control system resulted in a special modification of processing status information from the lighting control system when an open contactor or circuit breaker does not cause the generation of error messages from the connected luminaires but masking of these statuses will occur instead and the information on the open contactor (circuit breaker) will override them.. The system operator has the possibility to re-route the currently measured values of daylight on the omni-directional sensor from any station to any other station.. This method ensures sufficient redundancy in the event of a sudden station sensor failure.. Emergency lighting:.. Emergency luminaires are connected permanently to 220 V DC, they are provided with DALI gears and controlled by the Luxmate central control system.. Some luminaires are installed in public areas and are controlled on the basis of daylight intensity, others are turned on continuously and some are turned off in the basic mode.. Monitoring of the emergency luminaires is extraordinarily important as passenger safety is the most important operational aspect.. Emergency luminaires are also currently installed in hazardous areas such as switching stations, transformer stations, cable spaces, cable channels and ventilation shafts.. An application for testing emergency lighting, allowing testing luminaires in stations and related lighting technology and assessment of the results of tests including their archiving is available in the system operator s workplace.. Conclusion:.. Zumtobel has been a supplier of the lighting control system for the Prague underground since 1997.. The concept of station lighting has undergone substantial development from a low number of incorporated luminaires through large units controlled in ON/OFF mode up to the DALI digital system during this period.. The DALI system has found a unique possibility of application for the construction of a system guaranteeing maximum operational safety thanks to both its reliable function and provision of all operational data for further processing.. It is obvious that this industrial application can also be inspiration for other technically focused projects in which somewhat different aspects than we are used to in the case of normal DALI projects will be applied.. A major technical innovation on Terminal 5 is the full integration of the self-contained and central battery emergency lighting testing and monitoring with the general DALI lighting controls.. This avoids duplication of systems and resolves any compatibility issues.. It has been achieved using TridonicAtco s EM Pro DALI emergency lighting control units, which are designed to give total control of the emergency testing and reporting functions.. As a result, in addition to standard information such as indicating faults on the lamp, control gear or battery, the system can provide information on, for example, the device status, type of lamp and type of emergency unit and battery.. Automation of emergency lighting testing in this way, to comply with IEC 62034, eliminates much of the costly visual inspection required with conventional systems.. Given the vast expanse of Terminal 5, this will deliver significant savings in maintenance costs to BAA.. BAA Technical Leadership.. BAA deployed its Technical Leadership resource and principles (experienced Engineers with an intimate knowledge of maintenance) at the early design stages of the project.. This unique concept ensures that during the early part of the design process, when potentially fundamental decisions are being made (and subsequently at every stage through to commissioning and handover), important predefined criteria such as quality, assured performance, maintainability, and a predictable end result are clear to all involved.. Summary.. Use of a DALI based system at Terminal 5 has introduced a high degree of flexibility to the design of the lighting, as well as enhanced monitoring to provide an accurate picture of the lighting system.. Subsequently, DALI s open protocol proved invaluable when integrating the lighting to other control systems within the facility.. In addition to the considerable volume of DALI units deployed and the extent of the control system, this project stands out from others in the level of integration between the DALI system and other control systems that has been achieved, and the cooperation between the client (BAA), ATL and TridonicAtco in developing a lighting control system that complies to the relevant regulations and to the client s and design consultants requirements.. Martyn Suggett, Portfolio Technical Leader at BAA states, having worked with ATL from an early stage on the Terminal 5 project, I am more convinced than ever that the T5 Lighting Control System will deliver significant energy savings against conventionally lit Passenger Terminal Buildings within the BAA airports group, and also facilitate system tools to help us manage faults and re-lamping intervals using solid, quantifiable data.. Once in use on a day to day basis, I fully expect further refinements and developments to take place as our system knowledge increases and, as a result, deliver savings in excess of our most optimistic predictions prior to handover.. Terminal 5 has quickly been recognised as the benchmark for all major lighting installations within BAA in the future, and the relevant BAA Design Performance Specifications have been updated to reflect our desire to see DALI controlled lighting as the standard approach to major lighting projects..

Control Lighting Ltd / Norka UK Lighting.. Located in Cardiff Bay, in Cardiff UK is a multi-storey car park that has 1237 car parking spaces.. Due to the high profile of the Cardiff Bay development which includes the Welsh Assembly and the Wales Millennium Centre, the new multi-storey car park which is owned by Knight Frank LLP needed to integrate with this dynamic area.. To achieve this, the architect Scott Brownrigg Limited and the lighting designer Paul Traynor PLDA of Light Bureau developed the idea of 6 wave shape structures to be installed on the long façade of the car park.. The steel and fabric structures were manufactured and installed by Base Structures Ltd.. The intention of the 3-dimensional wave shapes is to link the car park with the original purpose of Cardiff Bay and its connection with the sea.. Another visual link with the sea was the requirement for the night time appearance of the wave to be lit using a combination of blue and white lighting.. Particular consideration was taken by Light Bureau (Lighting Consultant) in the specification of the fittings and  ...   a white T8 fluorescent tube and each fitting was modified to take two individual ballasts for individual lamp control.. When designing the lighting control solution for this project two key elements had to be factored in.. The first being the sheer quantity of individual control required for 472 fluorescent ballasts on a single control system; and the second being to be able to program the visual effects of the sequences in a graphical format and not a conventional channel = level arrangement.. To achieve these fundamentals, Control Lighting combined the use of a sophisticated DMX visual time line based control playback unit in addition to converting DMX into 12 separate DALI universes.. To minimise on the cable installation the fittings were specified utilising the DALI protocol which enabled a better level of individual control and reporting than other protocols designed for fluorescent ballasts.. To achieve the smooth conversion between DMX to DALI interface units, Control Lighting specified and installed Dynalite DDBC100 units at each row of fittings.. Careful consideration was taken on the timings of the sequences as well as the impact of the ambient temperature on the lamps and the DALI ballasts.. The sequences are recalled automatically using astronomical time clock commands, with manual override facilities also included.. The visual result details movement of light intensity utilizing the white and blue fittings across the wave structures in both linear patterns as well as dynamic spiral configurations..

The historical Landhaus situated only 200 metres from the Dresden Frauenkirche between the Pirnaischer Platz and the Neumarkt has been reinstated in all its glory now that the renovation work started in 2002 has been completed.. The permanent and temporary exhibitions naturally need different lighting conditions to show the articles in the best light.. The Dresden based engineering office Zibell Willner Partner therefore opted for the.. lighting management system because not only does it enable defined lighting scenes to be easily programmed and recalled, it can be reprogrammed easily to take account of changing requirements.. The lighting system was implemented by Hermos Systems GmbH, Dresden, as a certified system partner of TridonicAtco.. The art works are illuminated by a combination of direct and indirect light.. Two different approaches were taken for the general lighting.. Visitors to the first floor are greeted by a classic ceiling with simulated transoms that exude an air of calm.. Rectangular recesses in the ceiling clad in plasterboard are each lit on the long sides by three daylight white T5 fluorescent lamps and on the short sides by one such lamp.. Spotlights are mounted on power rails to provide the right accent lighting.. By contrast, the ceiling on the second floor has a high-tech character.. Each of the white rectangular ceiling elements is lit from below by four daylight white T5 fluorescent lamps operated by digital dimmable PCA EXCEL one4all control gear.. Attached to the support rails for the fluorescent lamps are power rails that supply the spotlights fitted with low-voltage halogen lamps.. These spotlights, which are fitted with filters for conservation purposes,  ...   lighting scenes to enable the current exhibits to be lit and the museum to be used for special events.. Since then, technicians at the museum have been able to modify these lighting scenes after only brief training so that the latest exhibits can be illuminated perfectly.. A service notebook is available for reconfiguring the lighting scenes.. This can be linked to the data network on site via a switch.. Only one technician is therefore needed.. The lighting designer decides on the dimming values for the particular exhibits, and the technician simply configures these settings for each lamp and luminaire directly in the exhibition halls using the.. software.. In this way, new lighting scenes can be set up in no time at all.. There are distribution boards in each of the five storeys, in the east and west wings of the building.. These boards are linked to the two distribution boards on the second floor in a star arrangement separately for each wing of the building via DALI/Ethernet gateways and a fibre optic network.. The switching centre, in other words the.. server, is located in the security area.. Also located there is the special stainless steel operating tableau in addition to the user-friendly.. interface.. Like most of the original modern style buildings it finally needs to be refurbished in these days.. The refurbishments are proceeding parallel, during the faculty activities.. Complex interventions can only be undertaken during the closedowns between semesters.. architecture |.. In 2008 the two main auditoriums were refurbished.. The entire space is about 13,00 m long and 1,50 m wide.. Due to the rising seating the room is from 6.. 00 m to 3,00 m high.. concept |.. The refurbishment is thought as a sensitive intervention on the generic architecture.. Part of the intervention is a new acoustic and light ceiling.. This ceiling needs to meet the high claims to represent an Architecture Faculty of an University.. It was designed as a series of wave like curved unique elements on the ceiling.. Every element is hiding the fittings that are directed versus the anterior one.. The main goal became to realize the aesthetical vision with the clear objective of a light-acoustic ceiling that distributes light only indirect.. This, of course taking into consideration all the appropriate standards, but focused especially on sustainability requirements.. effect |.. The current state of technology requires for a lecture hall (auditorium) of this size and shape with rising seating rows and a maximum room height of 6,00 m in any case direct lighting, because you can t achieve the required lux-levels (500 lux) all over the space with today available indirect luminaires.. Direct light is therefore rather necessary.. Due to latest scientific discoveries the application of standards can be discussed with serious arguments:.. The system is installed in a 3-storey building controlling up to 800 Philips Rotaris TBS 741 luminaires equipped with DALI ballasts and perfectly built-in the false ceiling together with the HVAC system.. The owner has implemented a Philips lighting management system in the building based on DALI technology in order to make it energy efficient.. The lighting system is intended to dim the lights depending on the amount of natural light and switch them on/off when presence/absence is detected through the use of multisensor devices which are fully integrated in the luminaire structure.. This system is composed of modular components, apart from the DALI module reflected in the key features point, that detect light levels/presence or absence (multisensors), read the entries from the sensors, command the behavior of the luminaires, etc.. Having the design brief of creating the most energy efficient building in the University, NDC selected the Quo Vadis DALI Lighting management System as the catalyst for delivering an energy optimisation strategy which includes daylight monitoring, occupancy detection, manual scene selection, central scheduling of all lighting on / off as well as  ...   Vadis system works seamlessly with the buildings BMS system and extracts DALI data such as power consumption, presenting the data in a 'Chart' format which can be displayed locally or alternatively throughout the building on a web enabled 'Dashboard'.. This information is also used as an eductional tool with the DALI lighting system providing a comparison between the lighting levels had the system been based on a more traditional manual switched structure versus actual light levels with DALI multi-sensors operating automatically.. The building design has been accredited with an 'Excellent' rating for the British BREEAM and fully complies with the 2006 Part L of the Building Regulations, a showcase for all future sustainable building developments in the UK..
