(Your body needs up to 6 months to get rid of mercury you may have consumed.. ) The worst are Shark, Swordfish, King Mackerel, or Tilefish.. These should not be eaten.. 1.. Tuna.. Concerning tuna, it is safest to eat canned light tuna.. Albacore or "white" tuna has more mercury than canned light tuna.. If you eat albacore tuna, limit yourself to 6 ounces (one average meal) of albacore tuna per week.. Note: Some Sushi is tuna.. 2.. Locally Caught Fish.. The changing climate is causing floods, droughts, and famine that severely harm the least of these at home and across the globe.. And our addiction to old fossil-based, non-renewable energy is crippling our economy and costing us jobs.. On September 20, 2013, the U.. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed the first uniform national standards for carbon pollution standards for new power plants.. This action coupled with the eventual existing source standard provides a historic step in the right direction to defend our children's health, and limit the already experienced threats of our changing climate.. Children,both born and unborn, are our most precious gift.. Each child should be born into a welcoming world, not one threatened by a changing climate.. For people like me who are pro-life evangelical Christians and life-long Republicans, defending our children, theunborn, and those yet to be born, is at the heart of who we are.. I live inSouthern York County, Pennsylvania.. According to the American Lung Association, Central Pennsylvania,including the Harrisburg and York areas, already receives failing marks forhigh ozone and particulates, leading to over 27,000 cases of pediatric asthmaand over 270,000 children at risk.. Higher temperatures caused by a changing climate simply multiply theharm.. Already York has the same climateas Richmond, VA twenty years ago.. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's September 2013 Report stated, "The global land surface temperature was 0.. 89 C (1.. 60 F) above the 20th centuryaverage of 12.. 0 C (53.. 6 F), marking the sixth warmest September on record.. For the ocean, the September global sea surface temperature was 0.. 54 C (0.. 97 F) above the 20th centuryaverage of 16.. 2 C (61.. 1 F), tying with 2006 as the fourth highest for September on record.. " Those under the age of 29 have only known a warming world, because every month since February 1985 has been above the 20th Century average.. Isaiah 24:5 (NCV).. 5 The people ofthe earth have ruined it,.. because they do not follow God's teachings.. or obey God's laws.. or keep their agreement with God that was to lastforever.. "The simple fact isthat if man [sic] is not able to solve his ecological problems, then man'sresources are going to die.. " Noted evangelical Francis Schaeffer correctly stated those words in 1970 and they remain true today.. The earth has a fever, and the fever's impacts threaten all of us.. Simply put, climate change is the greatest moral challenge of our time.. Climate Change resulting from carbon pollution makes bad things worse.. It intensifies natural processes, making natural events unnatural or extreme, and hits the most vulnerable the hardest.. The Democratic Republic of the Congo, Haiti, Malawi, Sierra Leone, and Bangladesh are already some of the most difficult places to survive in the world, and with climate change, they are at the most at risk.. These threats are not some future event.. They are happening now,and God's children across this planet cry for our help.. The Cape Town Commitment issued by the Lausanne Movement (founded by Billy Graham and John Stott,another internationally respected evangelical leader) recognizes the need for climate action, as does the global evangelical network Micah Challenge.. The changing climate kills thousands a year, multiplies diseases, and forces millions to flee their homelands, as food and water security simply do not exist.. Without basic needs met,conflict ensues.. In October 2009, Burke et.. al.. published WarmingIncreases the Risk of Civil War in Africa.. They conclude that for each 1 degree Celsius warming there willbe a 49% increase in African civil wars,a 54% increase in conflict, and an additional 393,000 battle deaths within the next 20 years.. They are not alone in predicting increased instability.. The 2010 United States Department of Defense Quadrennial Review states:.. Climate change will affect DoD in two broad ways.. First, climate change will shape the operating.. environment, roles, and missions that we undertake.. The U.. Global Change Research Program,.. composed of 13 federal agencies,reported in 2009 that climate-related changes are already being.. observed in every region of the world, including the United States and its coastal waters.. Among.. these physical changes are increases in heavy downpours, rising temperature and sea level, rapidly.. retreating glaciers, thawing permafrost, lengthening growing seasons, lengthening ice-free seasons.. in the oceans and on lakes and rivers, earlier snowmelt, and alterations in river flows.. Assessments conducted by the intelligence community indicate that climate change could have significant geopolitical impacts around the world, contributing to poverty, environmental degradation, and the further weakening of fragile governments.. Climate change will contribute to food and water scarcity, will increase the spread of disease,and may spur or exacerbate mass migration.. While climate change alone does not cause conflict, it may act as anaccelerant of.. instability or conflict, placing a burden to respond on civilian institutions and.. militaries around the world.. In addition, extreme weather events may lead to.. increased demands for defense support to civil authorities for humanitarian.. assistance or disaster response both within the United States and overseas.. Just a fewmonths ago, my dad, an 87-year-old former coal miner, and I were sitting at hiskitchen table and having a discussion.. "We just don't have the winters we used to have," he said, "Snow used to stay around all winter, and we had a lot more of it.. I think it's time to do something about this climate change stuff before it's too late.. " My dad gets it, and most of us feel it inside.. In 2012, Pennsylvania experienced atotal of 24 broken heat records, 5 broken snow records, 40 broken precipitation records, and 5 large wildfires.. Ourweather is more extreme and getting worse.. In addition to my Dad, most of my family worked in coal; and before becoming a pastor, I worked fourteen years designing and supplying equipment to both the coal mining and utility industries around the world.. While businesses like Dow Chemical, M M Mars, and even Wal-Mart spend billions for energy efficiency, big coal spends hardly anything to study how to clean up their act.. Only when forced by regulations did the coal industry address mine safety, acid rain, mercury pollution, and all forms of water pollution and land reclamation.. My childhood play grounds near my Cambria County home were un-reclaimed strip mines that spewed sulfur and heavy metal contaminated water into the remaining forests and streams.. Some say coal produces the cheapest electricity.. In York County, I could pay around $0.. 08 per kWh for electricity but thanks to Pennsylvania's Switch Program, I elected to pay $0.. 085 per kWh for renewable energy.. This is hardly an economic burden that you may hear from some today.. However, sustainable energy costs much less when you factor in all the external costs from coal like medical bills, lost lives, property damage, and the like;coal electricity is triple what you pay at the meter, according to one study.. It may appear cheap, but each of us pays the price in our children's health, insurance premiums, and polluted water and air.. They are hiding their costs in the bodies of our children and in the changing climate.. Defending our children's health now and in the future must be a national priority.. It's the greatest moral challenge of ourtime, one we are all called to do something about.. We need creative minds making new energy discoveries, energy efficient cars, appliances, homes, and buildings.. We also need state specific plans that wil lallow each region the maximum flexibility to reduce carbon pollution.. Pennsylvania is not Iowa or even New Jersey.. State flexibility provides the advantage for local wisdom, industry, and opportunities.. One of the primary tasks of the body of Christ is to help the city of man remember other more fundamentally truths about himself and the world around him.. It's been one year since Hurricane Sandy.. So many lost their homes and property when a storm of epic proportions battered the East Coast, and while we can not lay the blame on global warming, we can say that climate change contributed to the dimensions of this storm.. photo by Charlie Walker used through flickr creative commons.. In particular we saw first hand, as we have before, the vulnerability of American infrastructure to this type of storm.. We continue to see the vulnerability of our governing culture and insurance industry in the empty homes and displaced lives.. Storms of this proportion cause Christians of conscience to stop and wonder what like events mean for people in distant lands.. Lands where the resources are scarcer, governance more corrupt, and infrastructure nonexistent.. In light of these realities we begin to consider climate change afresh.. To consider the impacts of pollution on human life.. The need for Christians to defend the family, the home.. Let us not forget that our only hope is truly in the Lord of hosts.. He lifts our eyes to see Him and His work in the midst of suffering.. The Trinity who guides and defends, enables us to be better stewards of his good gifts.. Back to a Warmer Future with the IPCC.. October 04,2013, 13:04 PM.. by Jim Ball.. Do you know what was popular the last time the world had a cooler-than-average month? Ironically, the top movie was Back to the Future.. The No.. 1 song was "Like a Virgin" by Madonna.. And David Letterman had just introduced for the first time his signature comedic vehicle, his Top Ten List.. All back in February 1985.. Ever since Letterman's Top Ten List began, each month has been warmer than the 20th century average, 342 consecutive months,.. more than 28 years.. Our young people have only known a warmer world.. One week ago, on Friday, September 27, the world's leading scientists once again took us back to the future, the future of an ever-warming world.. And maybe this time we'll hear what they have to say as if for the very first time and take it to heart.. This particular back to the ever-warming future report was released by the Nobel Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the world's most authoritative body on the subject.. In this instance it was their.. Summary for Policymakers.. (SPM) of the first volume (WG1) of the long-awaited 4-volume Fifth Assessment Report (AR5).. As the name implies, this is the fifth time the IPCC has issued a thorough assessment of where things stand with climate change.. The last 4-volume report, AR4, came back in 2007.. So it has been a while.. (They take the time to get it right, which can be frustrating for folks like me who work on the issue!).. Here are the highlights.. Human Activities Are the Problem.. This basic conclusion was actually reached all the way back in 1995 with the second report.. (Brad Plumer of Wonkblog has a nice, brief.. review.. of this history; as a personal aside, I just love Wonkblog.. ) Through the years the confidence has grown to where now it is determined to be a near-certainty.. As the summary says:.. "It is extremely likely [a 95 percent or greater chance] that human influence has been the dominant cause of the observed warming since the mid-20th century.. (FYI, evangelical leaders affirmed this basic finding back in 2006 in the Evangelical Climate Initiative.. statement.. ).. Thus, for nearly 20 years the world's leading scientific experts have told us that human pollution from burning fossil fuels has created a situation where we are artificially heating up God's creation; we are giving the planet a fever.. This latest IPCC report reaffirms this conclusion even more strongly, a 95 percent or greater chance that we're the problem.. The good news, as the IPCC also affirms, is that we still have time to overcome global warming -- and with God's help, we can do so.. We have the solutions; what we need is the will.. We Are Starting to Feel the Consequences.. As this IPCC report highlights, each of the last three decades has been warmer than the last.. The scientists have confirmed once again what we've seen on the news and experienced in our own backyards -- the weather is getting more extreme:.. More heat waves (doubling their likelihood in some areas).. More violent storms.. Rising sea levels (and more quickly than previously thought).. More destructive storm surges (like in Hurricane Sandy).. Intensified floods and droughts.. More destructive wildfires.. Unfortunately, things are going to get worse and we must prepare for that; and if we don't do the right thing, even more dire consequences will result.. This leads to my next point.. 3.. We're The Solution -- But Time Is Running Out.. If we're the problem, then we're also the solution.. A scary thought? Yes.. But also a hopeful one.. The worst consequences are not inevitable.. We can do things to avoid them, things that are good to do for lots of reasons.. And Christian faith reminds us of the most important thing to remember: we are not alone! God is with us, and He will help and guide us in overcoming climate change as He does with everything else.. It has long been recognized that a dangerous threshold we wouldn't want to cross is raising the temperature more than 2 degrees Celsius (or 3.. 6 degrees F) above what it was before the start of the Industrial Revolution, or 2C for short.. Now, for the first time, the IPCC has given us a "carbon budget"; they have quantified how much global warming pollution we can emit to have a reasonable chance of staying below 2C.. To do so, we must not emit more than 1000 gigatonnes of carbon (GtC) since preindustrial times.. As of 2011, we have used up over half of that budget, or 531 GtC.. Unfortunately, our current rate of pollution would have us exceeding this budget in about 30 years.. Now you might be thinking, "What's the rush? When year 29 rolls around we'll get serious.. " Perfectly understandable.. Unfortunately, it can't work that way (and highlights a shortcoming of the "carbon budget" framing).. First off, this is a budget to stave off unprecedented damage; even the amount of pollution we have already emitted is causing harm, and the more we add, the more harm there will be.. So the loving thing to do is start reducing as much as we can right now.. Second, how is it that we emit the pollution? We do so through power plants that last 50-plus years, vehicles that last 10 to 20 years, buildings that last 100-plus years.. In other words, each time we invest in something that has a by-product of global warming pollution, we lock in those emissions for 10, 20, 50, 100-plus years.. (That's unless we want to prematurely tear such investments down, which of course no one wants).. For several years now the International Energy Agency (IEA) has done a similar analysis to determine what needs to be done to avoid 2C and by when.. Their.. conclusion.. is that worldwide carbon pollution needs to peak by 2017.. So, it may take us 30 years to blow through our budget before unprecedented damage occurs, but we will have exceeded our "carbon pollution investment budget," if you will, by around 2017.. Thus, by the end of this decade, if not sooner, we will have set our course and put ourselves on autopilot that in 30 year's time leads to a 2C world and beyond.. That is why the next several years are so crucial, why the loving and righteous path is the creation of sustainable economic progress via a clean energy revolution that creates jobs, cuts air and water pollution that hurts our kids and the unborn, and enhances both our economic and national security.. A better and safer world, free from the scourge of unprecedented climate change, is indeed possible, and God is leading the way and giving us the spiritual power necessary to prevail.. Jim Ball, Ph.. While we do not agree with President Obama on all issues, we agree on the overwhelming scientific evidence of climate change's threat to America, our children, both unborn and born, and all God's children across God's creation.. If science shows that life begins at conception, then we cannot deny the threats of air pollution, water pollution, toxin exposure, and carbon pollution are also threats to our children, unborn and born.. As pro-life Republicans, we must set aside partisanship and come together to protect God's creation from climate change.. We need solutions that engage all of America.. American ingenuity can help us cut down on pollution, champion energy efficiency and create the next generation of jobs, while protecting our kids from harm.. According to the American Lung Association, over 32.. 3 million U.. children are at risk from air pollution that our increased temperatures will only exacerbate.. This does not include the additional threats from extreme weather, droughts, or raising sea levels.. Nor does this include the millions of children already impacted in Africa, Latin America, Asia, and the South Pacific.. The poorest of the poor, who bear the least responsibility for carbon pollution, already pay the cost.. Today, EPA Administrator McCarthy unveiled the proposed New Source Standard for Carbon Pollution for Power Plants.. We are pleased at the revised proposed standard considered the views of all stakeholders, including over 52,000 pro-life Christians who wrote positive comments in support of the original proposed rule last year.. We are encouraged that the road map shared for the upcoming existing source guidelines will provide individual state-by-state flexibility.. A group of evangelicals leaders went to Malawi this past May to hear about some of the current and future impacts of climate change on Malawi.. On our trip we learned that economic growth is a key factor in growing climate resiliency.. That is why we believe that decentralized power can be a part of the solution for rural Malawians.. When folks have access to clean air, clean water, abundant and reliable clean energy, the internet, and a stable food supply they can really begin to flourish and thrive.. We don't want give more hand-outs in foreign aid, but we want to work with their God given talent so that they can move forward in a way that builds their capacity to thrive.. With governance issues in Africa and the overwhelming cost of building centralized power, we do not see centralized power as being the only solution to the challenges of Africa.. There is a place for centralized power, but if Africans have to wait on their government or our government to act they will never move forward.. Far better for local folks to be empowered and equipped with market based local solutions.. Mini-grids and other local energy solutions can be a real part of the future.. This week almost 8,300 pro-life evangelicals joined the drive to make our air that much cleaner for our children.. Given the increase in Asthma rates and birth defects with at least some linked to environmental toxins, it just makes sense to clean up our air and to do everything we can to protect our kids.. This week we delivered those 8,300 comments in person to Acting EPA Administrator Bob Perciasepe and urged him to act on cleaner fuel standards (Tier 3).. Thanks to a number of environmental standards and protections we have here in the United States, we are far less worried about illnesses caused by pollution we breathe in than other parts of the world.. That doesn't mean more can't be done.. Currently the U.. ranks 47th in the world for reducing sulfur emissions, which impacts the health of thousands of Americans, especially children and the elderly.. The EPA has the power to protect our citizens' health by implementing "Tier 3 standards" that would reduce the amount of sulfur in our gasoline.. Cleaner gas in, less pollution out.. When it comes to protecting human health, especially vulnerable populations like kids and the elderly, who are you going to believe, the American Lung Association (ALA), or the American Petroleum Institute (API)? Are you going to believe those who have a vested, financial interest in maintaining the status quo like the oil corporations? Or folks who are fighting to protect human health?.. We at the Evangelical Environmental Network (EEN) are proud once again to stand with our friends and colleagues at the American Lung Association (ALA) to demand that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) fulfill its obligation to protect our kids and the vulnerable from dangerous, life-threatening pollution.. What we're talking about today is a proposed EPA regulation to get more sulfur out of gasoline, the so-called "Tier-3" standards.. Compared to other countries, we've fallen significantly behind in reducing sulfur,.. ranking.. 47th, just behind Thailand.. No disrespect to Thailand, but we can do better.. It's well past time for the entire country to meet a standard that is already in place in California, the European Union, and Japan -- and that's what the EPA has proposed.. A recent.. report.. from the ALA concluded that cleaning up the gasoline we put in our tanks would cost us about a penny a gallon, and improving the ability of new vehicles to reduce such pollution would add about $150 to the sticker price.. Here's what health benefits we'll get for this investment:.. Save thousands of lives.. Produce from $8 billion to $22 billion each year in health benefits.. Reduce the amount of pollution that 33 billion cars would produce.. This last point brings up one of the great things about making the gasoline cleaner: we don't have to put new emissions control equipment on our existing cars, or buy a new car, to get cleaner air.. From day one.. Pretty simple.. As the car companies put it in their.. testimony.. in favor of EPA's proposed Tier 3 regulations:.. While it will take a couple of decades for the current fleet to be replaced by vehicles with tighter emission controls, reducing sulfur at the pump will immediately reduce emissions from every gasoline-powered vehicle on our roads, no matter how old (p.. 2).. But that's not all.. As the car companies further pointed out, removing more of the sulfur from gasoline will help improve gas mileage in new vehicles, saving folks money at the pump and reducing global warming pollution to boot.. So what's not to love?.. Well, as you can imagine, the oil companies are not happy with having to clean up their gasoline.. Last spring during the run up to the elections when gas prices were high the American Petroleum Institute sponsored a study saying that doing so would cost 25 cents at the pump.. Some.. politicians.. tried to make political hay out of this, but even at the time it was pointed out that this particular study wasn't modeling what EPA was planning to propose.. Now that the EPA has put out their proposed Tier 3 rule, this industry-sponsored study has been.. revised.. What did it find? The cost of producing a gallon of gas would go up 6 to 9 cents.. Of course, this doesn't mean that you would necessarily pay that cost.. Oil prices are set in a world market, so competition could mean that U.. refineries would have to absorb such costs, meaning less profits for them.. As mentioned earlier, the American Lung Association found that the cost would be about a penny a gallon.. So what would this cost the average consumer? Let's err on the high side and say that it would cost 5 cents a gallon.. The average consumer.. uses.. about 10.. 4 gallons a week.. Let's make that a little higher and say 12 gallons.. So 5 cents times 12 equals 60 cents.. So would you be willing to pay anywhere from 12 cents to 60 cents a week to protect our kids from dangerous air pollution? For us that's an absolute no-brainer.. And if that doesn't do it for you, think about this.. Where's a place where there's lots of sulfur in the air? (Hint: fire and brimstone.. ) How about we make our air less like that of H-E-DOUBLE-TOOTH-PICS.. Here at EEN, we're all for that!.. We're all grateful for the leadership of Senators Portman (R-OH) and Shaheen (D-NH) on energy efficiency as found in their bill,.. The Energy Savings and Industrial Competitiveness Act.. This bill has already attracted strong bi-partisan support, having passed the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee by a vote of 18-3 on May 8, 2013.. Energy efficiency is one of the cornerstones of EEN's.. Made-in-America Five-Point Action Plan.. , and so we are especially glad to see leadership in this area.. According to.. analysis.. done by the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (ACEEE), policies contained in this bill would create 80,000 jobs and save consumers $4 billion on their energy bills by 2020.. Promoting energy efficiency, such as is being done by Senators Portman and Shaheen in their.. Energy Savings and Industrial Competitiveness Act.. , is good stewardship of our God-given resources: good for families; good for our country; good for God's creation.. A Great New Book: When Heaven & Nature Sing, by Ed Brown.. May 31,2013, 09:32 AM.. My friend and colleague the Rev.. Ed Brown, head of.. Care of Creation.. , asked me to briefly review his latest book,.. When Heaven Nature Sing: Exploring God's Goals for His People and His World.. So here we go.. Ed is good at a lot of things and has done a number of jobs over his career that formally were not that of a pastor.. But fundamentally Ed is a teaching pastor.. He can't help it.. And that's a good thing for the rest of us.. Because a good teaching pastor like Ed can communicate in ways that the average person can readily grasp.. And by that I don't mean some type of pejorative "dumbing down," a phrase often employed by others to mask their own inadequacies of being able to communicate their ideas clearly.. Ed can use big words like "Anthropocene," but he does so in a way that anyone can understand.. There's a phrase that pastor-types often use: "that book will preach.. " Strangely enough, it's a compliment.. For if a book can be used easily to make a sermon or series of sermons good, well it's worth its weight in gold to a busy pastor who has to come up with a sermon every week.. Ed's book will preach.. But Ed's book will also teach.. I think it would be a great discussion book for adult education classes or Youth Groups.. Indeed, this may be its greatest contribution -- an excellent creation-care resource for Christian education.. And the Church is in desperate need of such resources, those that don't just sit on the shelf but actually get people thinking and acting differently -- more aligned with God's will for our lives and for the whole of creation.. This last point needs to be emphasized.. Ed's book is especially helpful when it comes to helping folks see things differently in order to act differently.. And it includes some very practical help in achieving this.. I think my favorite part of Ed's book is in Chapter 15 where both his teaching abilities and his management skills are merged; Ed brings it all together in two very practical Tables where he combines our "zones of influence" (e.. g.. home, work) with the five biblical principles he has articulated (e.. "Kingdom Values"; "Balanced Life"), and then asks us to fill in actions steps for each of the principles in each of the zones.. So we have in one place a very handy way to remember why, where, and how to bring our living in line with God's will.. Not bad!.. For all these reasons I highly recommend Ed's new book,.. When Heaven Nature Sing.. Stop Playing Games with Gina McCarthy.. May 09,2013, 12:53 PM.. by the Rev.. One of the latest examples of gridlock in Washington occurred this morning when my fellow Republicans on the Senate's Environment and PublicWorks (EPW) Committee boycotted a confirmation vote for Gina McCarthy to become the next head of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).. Without the Republicans, the committee didn't have a quorum, and so no vote could be taken.. Across the nation, Christians are sick and tired of Washington's gridlock.. We want decisions and not political games.. To that end, in March I organized a group of Christian leaders to pray on the lawn of the US Capitol for an end to gridlock; around the country Christians joined us in prayer -- including the states from where these Republican senators on the EPW Committee come from.. We prayed that our elected officials would seek common ground for the good of our nation.. I'm on record supporting Gina's nomination.. She has excellent qualifications, has the record of listening to all sides, and even has the support of many in industry.. I consider her a.. "good cop".. in protecting the health of our children.. Even a few weeks ago, not a single Republican during her EPW nomination hearing questioned Ms McCarthy's qualifications.. Senator Sessions (AL) even stated she would be confirmed.. If a Senator, Democrat, or Republican, wishes to vote no on Ms McCarthy's nomination, that's their right.. But cast a vote, and live by our American democracy and way of life.. Too many of our service men and women put their lives on the line everyday (including my own son) to protect our way of life to have Senators play such games.. If Congress doesn't like the Clean Air or the Clean Water Act that protects our children's lives and health, then change the law -- that's part of their job.. Just don't play games with the "top cop" for environmental health whose job is to enforce what Congress already passed.. Give Gina McCarthy the confirmation votes she deserves, and let's put in place the "top cop" to protect our children from pollution.. Hescox is President/CEO of the Evangelical Environmental Network.. The Overlooked Children of Africa- Climate Disruption Tour Day 2.. May 08,2013, 13:37 PM.. Today we spent a full day visiting Fombe village in the Chickhwawa district.. We met with many of the families (all farmers) and learned a lot about how they are trying to adapt to the changing and uncertain rainfall.. We heard story after story of farmers telling us that before the rains used to come in October now they come in December.. Here's a group of us in Fombe village today.. When the rains do come they come in downpours leading to significant flooding problems in the surrounding villages.. Here's an adaptation dam built to correct a deviated river flow that threatened to destroy several homes in the village.. This year was a good year for rain, but checking on actual official measurements that meant a 6 week rainy season for the year.. In that span there were two significant days of rain and no rain after Feb.. 17th.. These farmers have already abandoned using corn crops for millet.. Even that is only enough to last three to four months of the year.. So this good year was still not nearly sufficient for survivial.. The next step for food is widespread adaptation of conservation agriculture which involves a specific planting method that keeps nutrients and moisture in the soil.. Lifnette James (41) has 6 children.. Annetta (21), Alifa (23), Ginny (18), Fatima (14), Dickson (8), and Innis (6).. She has lived in the village of Chagunda her whole life.. When Lifnette was born her parents had access to an abundance of food.. The family produced enough to give them 3 ox carts of surplus.. The surplus was enough to feed the family twice over.. Her parents used this surplus to provide for additional necessities like clothing and education, and to build a better life.. Life has changed for Lifnette's children.. Climate change has significantly reduced the length of the growing season.. What once was 3 ox carts of surplus is now enough food for half the year.. The growing season which was at 12 weeks in the 1970s has shrunk to 6 weeks in a good harvest year.. Here's what four months of harvest looks like.. For 6-year old little Innis this lack of food has also meant a lack of access to protein and the warmer weather has meant increased instances of malaria.. Malnutrition makes her ability to survive and fight off malaria much harder.. For 14-year old Fatima the lack of food means a lack of ability to afford secondary education.. Every year their family has to scramble to pay the fees for secondary school.. Not only are the fees a problem, but the lack of access to a balanced diet is a major challenge for learning.. Feeling weak during the lean months (September-November) really undermines Fatima's ability to reach her full potential.. The James family lives with extreme energy poverty.. Here's an example of what the family uses for light at night.. This is what energy poverty looks like in the villages of Malawi.. This is the only light this family owns.. That's it.. When it's the middle of the night this lights an entire room.. Other than this light the only other option is to start a fire.. It's hard to develop without access to energy.. One of the keys to overcoming climate change is turning energy poverty into energy prosperity.. Clean cook stoves is a first step in transforming the family's access to energy.. The next step is decentralized energy in the form of solar, biomass, and mini-hydro are among the market based innovations that will be key.. We need to turn energy poverty into energy prosperity.. Without clean and safe sources of energy children suffer.. Indoor air pollution is a leading cause for health problems like Asthma for children in Africa.. Women are also susceptible to burns when cooking over large open flames like you see below.. Poor indoor air quality directly results in the death of 1 million children each year.. Severe burns, primarily from cooking fires, annually effect approximately 4 million women worldwide, more than infected from HIV/ADS.. Cleaner burning stoves and solar stoves are an important first step towards energy prosperity.. The cook stoves cut down on the amount of wood needed to heat a stove.. In addition to stoves, market based mini-grids are catalysts for entrepreneurship and wealth creation.. Finding ways to build wealth capacity for the James family is essential for their long term success.. Access to food, water, new crop methods, energy, and cleaner stoves are all key to making the prospects for Africa's children much brighter.. Children like 6-year old Innis and 8-year old Dickson are growing in a time of increased food insecurity, drought, disease, energy poverty, and education barriers all driven by climate change.. At least 80% of Malawians are subsistence farmers that includes the James family.. This was a "good" year for rain.. Meaning that the James harvested after six  ...   James has aspirations for her children.. She would like all of them to be well educated and to eventually provide for her.. Good education, good jobs, her dreams aren't that much different than our own.. Climate change is making poor people poorer and hungrier, and as a result is limiting their access to education.. 14-year-old Fatima James would even like to be a journalist.. When she was asked what she wants to be when she grows up, she said, "I want tell the story of what's happening to people in my village.. I want to let the world know and make a difference.. Unfortunately education is a challenge for too many in Chagunda.. Without the abundant harvests they once enjoyed and with most of their energies devoted to survival, very few of them have the time and resources to make additional income.. This decrease in food abundance is a direct result of climate disruption.. Free primary school ends at the 8th grade.. Without additional resources too many children in Chagunda will never access the type of education which could provide new jobs and vocations.. In addition to a lack of resources the lack of nutrition and the increasing food instability has a major impact on children's ability to learn.. Lifnette told us that when her children are hungry they often don't go to school, because they can't concentrate.. By.. supporting EEN's work in Malawi.. through our partner Eagles we can change this family's capacity for wealth.. We can go from extreme poverty to being able to afford secondary school costs.. Through a Village Savings and Loan program we can empower families to save and to earn some additional income by working together and lending to each other at affordable rates.. These successful programs are life changing.. Access to Water.. May 23,2013, 09:25 AM.. Climate change is having a major impact on water in Malawi.. The river pictured above use to flow 365-days a year and contained several types of fish.. The river was a source of water for agriculture and fruit trees.. Now the river is as barren as a desert.. The river has dried up and stopped running altogether.. Climate change has increased temperatures making the soil drier and has reduced the amount of rain that comes in any given season, making rivers like this dry up.. Rivers in and around Chagunda village have dried up just like this one.. What once use to be a source of life, food, and play is now a huge plain of sand.. Water still runs but only a few days after a major storm.. Chagunda village now relies on boreholes and wells for their water.. In Chagunda village they have had some wells go dry as the water table recedes in many parts of the country.. Chagunda village will never be able to dig themselves out of their water scarcity.. Lifnette says that she spend a good chunk of her time walking back and forth from water wells and larger nearby rivers (that haven't gone dry because they run from Lake Malawi) to wash clothes and get fresh drinking water.. What used to be abundant and readily available is now harder and harder to come by.. Water is life, and for too many in Malawi water is scarce.. For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.. " (Jesus of Nazareth, Matthew 23:11-12).. "In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.. " (Philippians 2:5-7).. You may see the deep disconnect between the way we live and the way Christ died for us to live.. Slowly read a selected portion of Scripture a number of times.. Return to it with the intentional purpose of "seeing and hearing Christ" in the text.. Ask God to open the eyes of your heart to see in Christ's example what he wants you to see, and to see how you are to be like him.. "The evening meal was being served".. [Jesus] poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples feet.. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, 'Lord are you going to wash my feet?' Jesus replied, 'You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand'" (John 13:2-8).. Ask God to encourage you and show you what it means to have the attitudes, love and mindset of Christ in all that you do.. March 21, 2013.. "Consider how the lilies grow.. They do not labor or spin.. " (Jesus of Nazareth, Luke 12:27).. "I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty.. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.. " (Philippians 4:12-13).. Think about what steps you can take every day to turn towards Christ.. Ask him to show you the sources of discontentment.. Spend time in the middle of your day doing something that takes you out of your normal cares and concerns (grab lunch with a friend, call a member of your family, go to that prayer time or fellowship meeting you've been neglecting).. Know that the works of God take time to form in our life; stay diligent and know that God will meet you.. Slowly read a Gospel portion, a Psalm or Proverb, or another Scripture passage, perhaps several times.. Listen for a word, verse or passage from God that is "quickened" or "speaks" to your heart.. Consider jotting what you "hear" in a Lenten notebook or journal.. "My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand.. " (Jesus of Nazareth, John 10:27-28).. March 20, 2013.. March 22,2013, 10:33 AM.. Significantly, scripture records that Jesus went out into nature and took solitude with the Father.. Passages tell of him drawing off to a "lonely" or "desolate" place," not necessarily a desert-type environment, but somewhere without people around.. (Mark 6:30-32,46).. While Jesus, a carpenter by trade, most certainly appreciated reinvigorating drinks of fresh water, he also intentionally drew deep, long drinks of "living water" from Abba.. Jesus went out into nature and there satisfied his spiritual thirst to be alone with, and to draw from His Father's spirit.. Let us do the same.. Jesus is our pattern in all things.. (John 4:10).. "In our much-doing we lose perspective, lose our energy, and more importantly, lose our creativity and sense of humor.. We thus begin to carry the world on our shoulders and soon become overwhelmed or disillusioned.. But to simply withdraw does not provide the way forward, for we then take our hurt or tired self with us.. Rather, the movement to solitude is to find a renewed self, and from the center of being loved and nourished we can again enter our world with purposeful engagement and joyful detachment.. --Henri Nouwen/Charles R.. Ringma, Dare to Journey, NAV Press, 2000.. This weekend, let's do as Jesus did.. Go out somewhere, get away from people, plunge into nature, pray; take time to be alone with God and with yourself.. In solitude and Sabbath take a long drink of the "living water" freely offered to us all.. Scripture.. "But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.. " Luke 5:15.. "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.. " Matthew 11:28-30.. "In repentance [returning] and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength.. " Isaiah 30:15.. "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!" Psalm 46:10.. "Those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.. "Isaiah 40:31.. Father, I have been praying for myself, but today as a lot of us are drawing to the close of this Lenten Devotional time together, I lift up all who have been reading these reflections and seeking you.. I do not know them, but you know them.. I bless them, and their families in your Name.. I pray you meet their every need.. Reveal more of yourself and deepen their faith.. Grant each of them physical rest, spiritual replenishment and a drink of "living water" from your heart this weekend.. Grant each one grace, Shalom and strength.. Reveal and confirm your will and the works appointed to each one.. Thank you for our Lenten journey together.. I pray with gratitude in the name of Christ our Messiah.. Amen.. March 19, 2013.. March 22,2013, 10:30 AM.. Work, family, food, church, relationships, reduce my footprint, exercise, shop, go to special events---and now, cultivate creativity? Do more? Battle climate crisis.. Impact the world.. You have got to be kidding, right?.. God our Father is not a tyrant.. His adversary, who is also our adversary, is tyrannical by nature.. A proper flow of grace and the Holy Spirit's creative dynamics in our lives actually breaks stress and releases us from "the tyranny of the urgent.. We can better experience calm and the fullness of Shalom when we live as co-creators; when we prayerfully ascertain and do the will of God as He confirms and directs.. No more.. No less.. Calling us to consider and cultivate our creativity this week is intended to relieve, focus, order and release us.. Again, as we hear from God about appointed works, we will need to be open to His pruning something off or out of our lives and schedules, in order to enable us to focus, engage and creatively "actuate" His appointed will.. Creative living is a back-and-forth, organic, doing-and-adjusting-in-relationship endeavor.. God our Father would rather have us step up to bat, swing at the ball, miss and strike out, than be afraid or unwilling to try.. We need not strive for anything novel or "new.. " We already carry within us the "seeds" of our appointed works---those things God has pre-created, prepared beforehand, that we should walk out.. We will find ourselves enthused in appointed callings.. Enthusiasm is part of being empowered by the Holy Spirit.. "Creativity is a natural extension of our enthusiasm.. " --Earl Nightingale.. "Learn the past, watch the present, and create the future.. " --Anonymous.. Step over procrastination.. Many creative individuals get a lot of good to great ideas but rarely finish anything.. Many "flit" like butterflies.. Many have false starts and false expectations about how much real work and practical effort that accomplishment requires.. Prayerfully pick one project.. Prayerfully plan how you might complete it.. Finish that one.. Lift your works to the Lord each day.. Jesus receives our prayers, efforts, labor and production.. He makes them complete and perfect and presents them to the Father.. This is true in every area, including our engagements and efforts in EEN Creation Care.. Often what we are called to do seems unimportant, mundane, maybe just "grunt work.. " Some efforts seem meaningless and almost nothing, as tiny and lost as one dandelion seed among millions in the wind.. No matter.. Our job is to pray and do the next thing in front of us and offer it to Him.. Jesus' job is to add it all up and do the "grand total.. " We can relax and creatively flow.. Christ determines the impact of our acts of obedience, here and in eternity.. (Ephesians 1:7-12).. As we conclude this week of reflections on creativity, it seems that the Lord is asking each of us what He asked Moses: "What do you have in your hand?".. Engage with that.. Do it, so that many might believe.. "Anxiety is the handmaiden of creativity.. " --T.. Eliot.. "Not to dare is to lose oneself.. " --Soren Kierkegaard.. "Then the Lord said to Moses, 'What is that in your hand?' 'A staff,' he replied.. The Lord said, 'Throw it on the ground".. so that they may believe.. '" Exodus 4:1-5.. Mary said to the servants, "Do whatever He tells you.. " John 2:5.. "In Him we have redemption through His blood.. That in the dispensation of the fulness of the times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven and which are on earth, in Him.. " Ephesians 1:7-12 NKJV.. Lord Jesus, we think of Mary's word to the servants at the wedding in Cana, and her own answer to you at the time of the annunciation: "Be it done unto me according to your word.. "I desire to hear and do your word.. What one appointed thing, out of all the good things I could do co-creatively with you, would you desire me to engage in.. I come to do thy will, Oh God.. Please show me what you have put into my hand.. For your glory.. March 18, 2013.. March 18,2013, 06:10 AM.. The Human Genome Project was completed on this day in 2003.. The DNA "alphabet" of humans, three billion pairings of some 30,000 genes, was mapped for the first time in human history.. This global collaborative creative effort started in 1990 but finished two years ahead of schedule.. In 2000, as Genome mapping progress was reported, President Bill Clinton declared: "Today we are learning the language in which God created life.. The Scottish poet Gillian Ferguson was so struck by that statement that she decided to spend the next four years writing poems about genetics.. That became The Human Genome: Poems on the Book of Life.. In one poem she wrote: "DNA " or, deoxyribonucleic acid " / a mouthful which should be a poem; / adenine, cytosine, guanine, thymine, / which should be the names of angels " / creative bond of adenine with thymine, / cytosine with guanine; A to T, C to G, / which is love, / as chemistry.. God's love is creative chemistry.. Creativity is part of God's chemistry.. Do you ever see your life as a laboratory for spiritual discovery and creation? You should.. It is.. Because you are an "image bearer" of your Creator you are creative.. Period.. (Genesis 1:26-27).. God creates ex nihilo, "out of nothing.. " We create ex materia, "out of material.. Creativity is mysterious.. Defining it is difficult.. But it can be nurtured.. Pretend you are a seed that has just been planted in warm, moist soil.. Let the following gleanings and musing on creativity cause you to awaken and sprout.. "Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?" (Isaiah 43:18-19).. "Creativity is the ability to see relationships where none exist.. " -Thomas Disch.. "Now faith is the substance [realization] of things hoped for, the evidence [confidence] of things not seen".. By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.. " (Hebrews 11:1-3).. "For whatever is born of God overcomes the world.. " (1 John 5:4 NKJV).. Seize, steward and act on inspiration.. Jot it down; capture it! You can now electronically journal, dictate to yourself, key in a memo on your Smartphone or iPad, carry post-it notes or a small spiral notebook, write on a napkin.. An entire book can be built from Smartphone text memos, little spiral notebooks, a running computer document, notes on index cards, pages gathered and placed in a 3-ring binder, big spiral notebooks, jottings on post-it notes, scraps of paper, even Starbuck's or MacDonald's napkins.. You can blog and text and Tweet your thoughts and turn skeptics into champions for Creation Care.. You can post your pics and send them around the whole world on Flickr.. You can be a creative Creation Care dandelion.. Entire houses in Maryland were built from sketches a joyful couple made on napkins.. Mathematicians and physicists use chalk boards, or probably dry-erase white boards now, or computer "tablets?" Draw in the sand and take a Smartphone pic.. Write in the dirt.. Jesus did.. (John 8:6-8).. How do you catch the beautiful birds God flies through the skies of your soul?.. To create something you have to bring it into being from unseen to real.. Stay faithful to God, family and work, but it's ok to daydream now and then.. Even play.. Consider all possibilities.. Take risks.. Permit yourself terrible first attempts.. Learn from failure.. Thomas Edison did.. Find the gold in rejection and defeat.. Abraham Lincoln did.. "A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.. " -Albert Einstein.. Creativity needs a little time and space.. God took six days to create it all and then he even rested.. Give ideas time to grow.. Cultivate and scratch in them, like gardeners dig in dirt.. Fire your inner critic.. Practice positive thinking and thanksgiving.. Take a gratitude check.. Creativity feeds on faith, possibility, positivity and optimism.. Think about "what can be," rather than thinking about "what is.. "Creativity takes courage.. " -Henri Matisse.. "Courage does not always roar.. Sometimes, it is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, 'I will try again tomorrow.. '" -Unknown.. "Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable---if anything is excellent or praiseworthy---think about such things.. " Philippians 4:8.. Father, again I agree with your Genesis word that I am creative because you have made me in your image and according to your likeness.. Please nurture and grow your creativity in me.. Release your life in me and your love and grace through me in new and effective ways.. March 17, 2013.. We have marveled at how God creates ex nihilo, out of nothing.. We brought ourselves into alignment with the often hard-to-believe truth of Genesis 1:26.. All of us, as human beings, are Imago Dei, "image bearers" of God Most High.. All of us therefore carry his attributes, including a portion of his creative genius.. You are therefore created creative.. You are "branded" and carry God's unique bar code for creative living and creative output.. You can, and you should, cultivate aspects of your God-given creativity.. Again, consider these words: originality, discovery, imagination, inspiration, ingenuity, inventive, resourceful, trouble-shooting, problem solving, risk-taking, being entrepreneurial, visionary, talented, thinking outside the box, coloring outside the lines.. Do you feel any of the above words describes a trait, talent or aptitude God has graced you with, that you possess? What have you done in the past to stir and develop this trait, talent or aptitude?.. How could you do more of that? How could you plan it into your day or week? The principle to keep in mind is that one cannot add some activity or exercise in an area without subtracting or pruning back in another area.. All persons have been allotted the same 24 hours in a day.. To be more creative and productive how might you need to adjust the use of your time each hour, day, week or month?.. But, besides a wise, frugal and disciplined management of time, what might give followers of Christ a "boost" or an "edge?" Reflect upon these two revelatory passages of scripture:.. "Splendor and majesty are before Him, strength and beauty are in His sanctuary.. " Psalm 96:6 NAS.. The most precious and unique plans and purposes of God ordained for you are "in the sanctuary," are in the person and presence of God.. They are like pre-drawn blueprints.. Your job is to unroll, observe and execute the plans.. You are to "walk out the works prepared beforehand.. " (Ephesians 2:10).. Photo (c) felinda - Fotolia.. com.. We enter "the sanctuary" through prayer, worship and waiting in the presence of God.. Jesus called it spending time in the "secret place" with Abba, our heavenly Father, our Source, the great Initiator, Architect of the universe.. (Matthew 6:6) Inspiration and ideas often appear and condense like drops of dew as we sit in silent adoration.. Authentic co-creative worship springs from a pure heart, from a person who lives with no unconfessed sin, who "washes" in and treasures the word of God, who maintains a posture of awe and reverence; an individual who "fears" God.. A supernatural provision can enter and energize the 24-hour day of one who seeks to please the Father by worshiping in spirit and truth.. (John 4:24) Such a person is promised grace for "length of days.. " (Proverbs 3:1).. "Length of days" is distinct from "a long life.. " It is an unusual combination of Hebrew terms that implies a warming, a lengthening, a kind of "stretching" of days.. God, being eternal in nature, can easily "warm" and "expand" the hours in our earth day.. Picture the way iron and other metals expand when heated.. A worshipper's day can thereby produce more than a normal 24-hour period should be able to produce.. Selah! Pause and ponder this.. Relate it to your desire to be more creative and more productive in your God-appointed works.. "Then God said, 'Let us make man in our image, in our likeness"'" Genesis 1:26.. "But let your heart keep my commands; for length of days and long life and peace they will add to you.. Let not mercy and truth forsake you.. "" Proverbs 3:1-4.. Father, I pray that you will help me discern the talents, creative traits and aptitudes you have graced me with.. I do not compare myself with any other person.. Yesterday we marveled at God creatingex nihilo, out of nothing.. We noted, in Eugene H.. Peterson's words, that "God's creative genius is endless.. Today we bring ourselves into alignment with the truth of Genesis 1:26.. "Then God said, 'Let us make man in our image, in our likeness.. '".. Each human conceived is accordingly Imago Dei, Latin for "image of God.. " Each human being is an "image bearer" of God Most High.. Humans carry and "mirror" aspects unique to their Creator.. Among these are personality,emotions, moral judgment, speech and language, abstract thinking, invention,creativity, architecture, music, visual art, liturgy and worship.. One theological bottom line of Genesis is this: All human beings are created creative.. Creativity is part of the spiritual/genetic DNA of the entire human race.. Because of Adam and Eve's disobedience and Fall in the Garden, our mental and creative capacities are diminished and curbed, yet still remain far beyond what the average person explores in a lifetime.. Those individuals we deem and appreciate as "geniuses" give us glimpses of the lost greatness of these capacities.. We are crimped creators.. As Children, photo (c) Vibe Images, Fotolia.. The average child tends to be very playful, creative and freely draws and paints with little regard about how exact or "perfect" their drawing or painting might be.. With physical maturation and the "self-consciousness" which tends to overwhelm teenagers, most stop drawing, painting, inventing and creating, or struggle a lot and feel like they are failing at their expressions.. As adults, most have "shut down" their creativity.. Our consumer culture demotes true playfulness, originality and personal creativity.. The "artists" do that, those generally seen as eccentric and out of the mainstream, maybe even anarchistic and revolutionary---the "far out" visual artists, crazed Hollywood celebrities, Facebook icons or druggie pop music stars.. Art budgets are cut.. With compassionate, mainstream creativity constricted, finding adaptive solutions  ...   those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven.. Be perfect [complete], therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.. " Matthew 5:43-48.. "For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes.. He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing.. " Deuteronomy 10:17-20.. Prayer.. Father, we recall and reflect upon your Son's words that he came to set captives free.. Thank you that you have ordained Jesus to be our deliverer, our liberator.. I pray that you intervene, expose human trafficking networks, and set children, women and men who are in slavery free.. I desire to live justly in all of my affairs.. Yesterday we introduced biblical justice as being relational.. Today, let's dig deeper into the wonderful reality that justice from God's perspective is redemptively re-creative.. Harmony in the human family, and in creation, was fractured when our first ancestors rebelled against divine decree and order in the Garden of Eden.. Full intimacy and relational integrity with God, co-union or communion, was lost.. God and man could no longer co-create, co-care for creation, nor converse and cavort in pure eternal liberty "in the cool of the day.. " (Genesis 2:19-20; 3:8-11).. Abba, enjoying eternal timeless delight in His only begotten Son, had intentioned that Jesus would find the same co-creative delight daily "in the sons of men.. " (Proverbs 8:22-31).. Fallen man fell captive to corruption and became bound to time.. Each member of the human family is but born to live under the death sentence decreed after Adam and Eve's rebellion and first "original" sin.. (Genesis 2:15-17).. Still, scripture records that God, in his mercy and justice, set "eternity in the hearts of men.. "(Ecclesiastes 3:11).. God graciously granted men and women the capacity to carry a sense of their Creator and "the greater" that had been lost.. He left the spark or a flicker of the eternal Divine.. Though fallen, human beings are still graced in ways to live "above time," to remember yesterday, to conceptualize, invent, create and plan for tomorrow.. Men and women carry a longing for their Creator and hunger to fill the spiritual void they sense within.. Creation is in a parallel state of "groaning," waiting for its redemption and release from the curse of corruption.. It too is longing to be made new and beautiful again.. (Romans 8:20-23).. The apostle Paul referenced this re-creative aspect of justice when he evangelized the citizens of Athens.. He told them that God deals with his "offspring" in diverse ways, so that they "would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us.. "(Acts 17:24-28).. Don Richardson's classic study, Eternity in Their Hearts, published by Regal Books, explores and presents historical evidences of this truth.. "He who was seated on the throne said, 'I am making everything new.. Revelation 21:1-5.. "He has made everything beautiful in its time.. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end.. Ecclesiastes 3:11.. Heavenly Father, your thoughts are above our thoughts, and your ways are above our ways.. Thank you for "setting eternity" in my heart and drawing me to seek after you and to find you.. March 8, 2013.. March 08,2013, 15:33 PM.. Justice can be defined as relational rectitude---honest and virtuous behavior that extends to each one what is morally right and that which is their due.. It is marked by integrity, honesty and impartiality.. Justice is comprised of relational bonds of mutual respect, responsibility and rights.. It could be likened to relational "glue," linking and cementing individuals and institutions into a law-abiding, orderly community, society or nation.. Justice is righteousness lived out as upright, responsible, compassionate, ethical behavior.. The Old Testament prophets repeatedly reminded and called for justice.. The prophet Isaiah pointed to a perfectly just Messiah who would spring up out of the "the root of Jessie" in the lineage of King David.. Isaiah said that this Messiah would not judge by seeing or hearing, "but with righteousness he will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth.. " (Isaiah 11:1-10).. When Jesus of Nazareth stood in his hometown synagogue, he declared that they were looking at the fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecy---the Just One, the Justifier, the Messiah had arrived.. He would die in stead, take on himself the guilt, judgment and sentence due the whole of the human race because of rebellion, sin, transgression and iniquity.. He would satisfy the demands of justice and reconcile and restore the relationship between God and fallen man.. Righteousness re-entered the earthly realm and human affairs through Christ the Messiah.. The potential for peace on earth, just relationships and Shalom was restored.. Jesus stood up and read: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor.. He has sent me to proclaim freedom to the prisoners and recovery of sight to the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.. Luke 4:17-21.. "But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!".. Amos 5:24.. Father God, we thank you that the Messiah described in Isaiah has come.. As we wait for full redemption, and for a new heaven and the new earth promised, fill us with the Spirit of Messiah; instruct and enable us to live and co-labor for justice, righteousness and Shalom.. The Temple in Jerusalem was the center of Jewish religious life, the very life of the nation.. People journeyed to it from all over the ancient world because it was the center of their faith and hope.. Jesus stood in the midst of that ancient grandeur and quietly said: "One greater than the Temple is here.. It seemed preposterous.. And yet the ages have corroborated him.. The Temple is gone; all that is left is a Wailing Wall.. He lives on, the most potent power in human affairs.. One greater than the Temple was there---is here.. Jesus is bigger than all our systems.. The acid test of anything 'Christian' is: Is it centered in Him, and does it work out from Him? Very often Christianity has become ec-centric, off the center, away from Christ.. In reality, Christianity is Christ.. We must get our values straight, and the central value of the Christian faith is Christ.. If a reply is made that 'God' is our central value point and starting point, the answer must be that apart from Christ we know little about God.. If we try to start from God, we do not start from God, but from our ideas about God.. But our ideas about God are not God.. We must start with God's idea about Himself, and God's idea about Himself is Christ.. Jesus is God breaking through to us.. He is the great simplification---God speaking to us in the only language we can understand, a human language; showing us His life in the only way we could grasp it, a human life.. Jesus is the human life of God.. He is the God become intimate.. Jesus is God the vague become God the vital.. He is manifest God.. Someone has said: "The important things are two: What is your center? And what is your circumference?" They depend on each other, for you soon get to the end of your circumference if you have the wrong center.. Your faith exhausts itself against the problems of life.. Christ must be the center.. From Him we work out into God, and life, and human problems.. He is our starting point.. And where is our ending point? Our circumference? There is no ending point, and there is no circumference---it is all infinite, boundless in Christ.. Join the chorus from the community all around.. Offer him human praise this weekend.. March 5, 2013.. The entire Bible places an extraordinary emphasis on caring for the poor and suffering.. Jesus did the same, summing it all up in the Great Commandments; love God whole-heartedly; love your neighbor as yourself.. Christ called for more than prayer; he called for acts of visitation, unconditional love and real-time assistance.. He pointed to the example of the Samaritan who did not pass by, but stopped and helped bring healing to a beaten, suffering neighbor who was not of his own religion and culture.. (Luke 10:25-37).. Jesus warned his followers to be of this, his Father's mindset (really heart-set), and left us with this stunning statement: "Whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.. " (Matthew 25:31-46).. The founding apostles placed a special focus on orphans and widows.. (James1:27) As an early church council in Jerusalem affirmed Paul's calling to extend the gospel to the whole of the non-Jewish Gentile world, they reiterated the Church's mandate toward the poor.. Paul recorded the apostles' admonition:.. "All they asked was that we should continue to remember the poor,the very thing I was eager to do.. " (Galatians 2:10).. Paul's attitude should be our own.. His eagerness is evidence that he understood that "remembering the poor" is one of God's primary ways of opening the "doors of the heart" and the "gates of the mind" to the gospel of Christ.. The community of the poor is always of central concern to Abba, our heavenly Father.. Jesus answered: "Love the Lord your God with all of your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and love your neighbor as yourself.. " Luke 10:25-37.. "Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.. " James 1:27.. Father, in these days of natural disasters, war and climate stress upon the earth, I intentionally "identify in" with all the poor and suffering members of the human family.. I lift all the poor and suffering, orphans and widows, the multitudes of earthquake victims, all refugees, and all suffering from war and climate change before you.. Please preserve life and property, bring relief, provide water, food, clothing, medicine and sustaining employment.. Show me my "neighbor" today, and each day, and grant me the grace and courage to stop, assist and bring relief and healing.. Please give me your heart in these matters.. In Jesus' name I bless the "community of the poor" and pray you show me how to assist and "actualize" your love to them.. March 4, 2013.. March 06,2013, 09:23 AM.. Today, let's continue to look at Christ's Community, the Ekklesia " the Church.. The apostle Peter said that as we respond to Jesus, invite and acknowledge his Lordship into our lives, then we ".. as living stones are being built into a spiritual house.. a royal priesthood.. a people belonging to God, that you [we] may declare the praises of him who called you [us] out of darkness into his wonderful light.. " 1 Peter 2:4-12.. Peter's phrase, that we may "declare the praises of him," carries far more than just a verbal connotation.. We are Christ's commissioned citizen ambassadors.. We are to be "going forth and showing forth" the praises, arete, the excellencies and healing virtues of our King.. This Greek word for praises, arete, is a kind of twin to the Greek word, dunamis, which Jesus used when he responded to the woman who, after 12 years of suffering from uterine hemorrhage, pressed through the crowd gathered around him and grabbed hold of the hem of his garment.. She was instantly healed; the flow of blood ceased.. Jesus stopped and said, "Someone touched me; I know that power, dunamis, has gone out from me.. " Dunamis is the root of our English word, dynamite.. In various early translations of the Greek manuscripts, the word "power" is rendered as "virtue.. " Healing virtue and power flowed then, and flow now from Christ.. Jesus of Nazareth went forth, intermingled with the masses, gave testimony to the Father, shared parables, and taught.. As he did so, his moral excellencies and healing virtues were seen and demonstrated.. They were "actualized.. " Healing virtue, the dunamis of God flowed florth and did its appointed work.. Unpacking Peter's phrase, "that we may declare the praises of him," reveals how radical and wonderful our calling and placement in Christ really is.. How privileged we are to be members of the Ekklesia, Christ's Community.. How awesome! Let us pray and be willing to go forth and show forth, to proclaim his excellencies, to demonstrate and "actualize" his redemptive healing virtues! This is not so much about "doing ministry" as simply being there, next to people, carrying Christ in our hearts.. He releases his mercy, love and dunamis.. Henri J.. M.. Nouwen catches both the simplicity and magnitude of our calling:.. Some of us tend to do away with things that are slightly damaged.. Instead of repairing them we say, "Well, I don't have time to fix it, Imight as well throw it in the garbage can and buy a new one.. " Often we also treat people this way.. We say, "Well he has a problem with drinking; well, she is quite depressed; well, they have mismanaged their business " we'd better not take the risk of getting involved with them.. " When we dismiss people out of hand because of their apparent woundedness, we stunt their lives by ignoring their gifts, which are often buried in their wounds.. We are all bruised reeds,whether our bruises are visible or not.. The compassionate life is the life in which we believe that strength is hidden in weakness and that true community is a fellowship of the weak.. --Henri J.. " "After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet.. Matthew 11:28 John 13:3-5.. "A bruised reed he will not break, a smoldering wick he will not quench, until he brings justice to victory.. Matthew 12:20.. Lord Jesus, I am willing to "go forth and show forth" your healing virtue, into the community of creation, into the chaotic world community, and into the Christian community.. Thank you for the privilege of knowing you and carrying you in my heart.. Show me tired feet to wash and people to refresh.. Reveal yourself, surprise and demonstrate your love and power to my friends and associates.. This is all about you, Jesus, not about me.. To you be the glory.. March 3, 2013.. Yesterday, we looked at "Christian community" and our call to "actualize" God's Reign of justice, generosity and joy.. We studied the triune Godhead as source and the model for our committed, loving, and serving relationships.. The relational unity of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit is the pattern for redeemed women and men as they share their lives in Christian community---all sisters and brothers in the family of God, the "community of the redeemed.. The whole of the redeemed community constitutes the Church, the Ekklesia, a New Testament Greek governmental term.. This non-religious, political term is comprised of "ek" meaning "out" and "kaleo" meaning to "call.. " An ekklesia or "calling out" was done by order of a king or ruling authority.. A "crier" called citizens out from their private homes and personal pursuits to assemble.. The Church is Christ the King's Ekklesia, his "called out ones.. Citizens of his Kingdom called into assembly to deliberate and legislate governmental matters from their Sovereign.. Drop any idea you might have or have inherited of the Church being a building or facility.. The Church, Christ's Ekklesia, are those men and women he has redeemed---quarried and drawn forth from the confusion and chaos of world community---and which, by his Spirit, he assembles together as "living stones" into a "spiritual house," a living and holy "people temple.. " The New Testament Ekklesia of Christ perfects and completes the Old Testament Congregation of Moses.. Commitment to Christ brings us to his person and under his Kingship.. Our Lord lovingly but surely calls us into assembly.. Have you surrendered to the will of your Sovereign? What living stones has he placed next to you? Which are over you? Are there some under your loving care, discipleship or mentoring? Or, might your King be bidding you reach down and lift someone up? Regard these; pray for them and obey.. You are to "actualize" his love and his will.. Jesus replied: "I tell you that " I will build my Church and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.. " Matthew 16:13-21.. "As you come to him".. You as living stones are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ".. You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.. Lord Jesus, our Sovereign, I come before you.. I surrender and yield my life to you, as you did to the Father.. Make your will and direction clear to me.. Show and confirm my placement as a "living stone" in your holy assembly, the Ekklesia.. Thank you for your appointed relationships and your callings in my life..
